I got stung by a wasp a week ago. Fortunately I am not allergic or sensitive to stings, but I did develop a nasty, itchy red rash. Sometimes Calamine helped, others Benedryl, others Cortisone. Doesn't itch much anymore (happened last Thursday) but I still have the rash. It is fading, but slowly.

You know that's only one good thing about being a smoker, wherever I was, dog show, horse show or barn everyone knew I always had cigs on me. Rip open a cig, spit in your palm, make a paste and slap it on any sting!
Instant relief. Gotta remember that.

I never knew that. Think it might work if I have a serious allergy to bee stings? Might give new meaning to "I'm dying for a cigarette." I do have such an allergy, and I'm not planning to buy a pair of Epipens. Not at no $750.00 a pop.

Has anyone ever tried hydrocortisone cream for poison. I also wonder if it would help with a case of shingles. That's not even a suggestion, but maybe a speculation.
I got a case of shingles after my heart attack. It was located on my chest along what my doctor called the Bra Line. I have never experienced such pain from a rash. A friend of my wives recommended Olive Seed Extract. We picked up a small pump spray bottle at Whole Foods. It was packaged as providing relief for a sore throat. I sprayed directly on the site and also sprayed it on a gauze bandage lightly covering the site. It provided me immediate relief. I haven't gotten poison ivy since I was a teenager but I am sure the Olive Seed Extract would work with poison ivy, too.

@CasketWeaver, congratulations on getting your certification for welding. When we lived in SE Texas there was a major need for welders. The refineries were always advertising for certified welders and good pay, too.

Well, I am sitting in my recliner trying very hard not to yell. I got into poison ivy or something again - working trying to clean up the yard... Man this stuff itches - their ain't enough calamine lotion in the world to reduce this itch...:yawn::cry::cry:

Technu, cortisone creams, oatmeal baths and calamine lotions are a waste of money for my poison ivy woes. There is only one thing that I use to quickly and efficiently remove the urushiol oils from my skin. GoJo Fast Orange hand Cleaner. Available at any auto parts store or Walmart. It's cheap and works .
When I feel an itch I scrub the area three times with Fast Orange, most of the of time the itch will return in about 12 hours so I scrub again. After a day or two I only have to scrub the area once a day for the next 2 or 3 days to remove the remaining oils that resurface.
Left untreated my allergic reaction will last for weeks on end so the GoJo has been a God Send for me.
That said, preventative washings have been the most effective way to control my sensitivity to urushiol. If I even think I've come in contact with the nasty stuff I wash with GoJo and never see the rash.
You can thank me in less than a week when your rash is completely gone.;)

Man, I hate wasp stings. We have a few around here and I have to regularly clear out their nests as they start to build them. Have not been stung yet. I have developed a method to clear out their nests from a distance - a far distance...

Man, my Uncle had shingles and if that stuff helped with Shingles - I am keeping this note in my forever file for future use - hope I never need it, but if I do or someone I knows does we gonna try it...

I keep that stuff in my Garage. Might try that each time I am working in the yard - couldn't hurt - extra step to avoid a repeat...

My grandfather used the same method until he caught the house on fire. My grandmother prohibited him from using his homemade flame thrower after that.

ouchie! Quite a few years ago I woke up one day and a spider had bitten me 5 times on my inner thigh. These critters got some nerve climbin in the bed and makin a meal outta us!
Mine itched like crazy until I used the Benedryl gel. That stopped the itch, but I washed it off when I took a shower & the itch came back. Put more gel on it & that was it. I can still see it, but no more itch, & it's not bright red like it was.

My Aunt had it. She was in the hospital for weeks & then in a skilled nursing rehab for weeks. It was all over her back & shoulder s & wrap around to the front on the left side. She was in a lot of pain.

@Nermal if you have a known reaction to bee or other stings, you do need to seek out the new less expensive Epi Pens. They are life saving!!
The tobacco trick is ONLY for pain, itching and swelling at the site. Normal everyday reactions!

Try Ronson Lighter fluid ... that's what I used on patches of poison ivy. Really.

Agreed! Tobacco paste is not for an allergic reaction at all. Get that Epipen & keep it with you!

??? ... hmm ... didn't think of that. But then when I posted my 'remedy' I hadn't read Semi- had it all over his body. Doubtful, I'd have dosed my whole body in lighter fluid. But for patches on my arm or wrists ... yep I'd use lighter fluid. Seemed to dry it up right quick. But you did have to put up w/ some lighter fluid 'burn'.
