I used to use one, or at least carry it around while recovering from stroke. Sometimes, my left foot still goes off in unexpected directions, but mostly people would see it and avoid bumping into me.
Now, when I go for walks I use trekking poles. They won't support a load, but are a tremendous aid in balance. If anyone goes that route, spend the extra money for a pair with cork handles or some other material that doesn't get slick with sweat. Oh, my walks are in a semi wilderness city park. I don't use the poles elsewhere.
