Musing on a Friday ::
I grew up with Westerns .. beginning with Audie Murphy, Tom Mix, and Johnny Mack Brown, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and Rex Allen. As well as each and every single Horse these folks had ..
Although, these days, I don't think it's recommended you send your child out like this ::
Later, moving on to Maverick, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, The Rifleman, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Laramie, Have Gun, Will Travel, Bonanza, The Virginian, Wagon Train, The Big Valley, Maverick, The High Chaparral, The Gene Autry Show, Sugarfoot, Cheyenne, Zorro .. to add a few ...
It's hard to pick a favorite, but The Rifleman and Have Gun, Will Travel were likely my top picks, although they were all good ..
The Western as we knew it went out of fashion I think back in the late 1960's .. there have been a few excellent films in the More Modern Age, most currently "The Revenant" (which is well worth a watch and you won't hardly recognize De Caprio)
I think several have mentioned "Hell on Wheels", which is the only reason I write this, normally I don't comment on my TV watching habits, not knowing what others here view ..
At any rate, I stayed captivated by Cullen Bohannan, Thomas 'Doc' Durant, Eva, Mickey, The Swede (Norwegian), Psalms, Elam and the rest of the excellent cast that brought this show to life .. although it owes it's roots to those early shows, it is, of course, much more gritty and explicit than those old shows .. loosely based on the Real Story of the Trans Continental Railroad, I cannot recommend it more highly .. one of my other top favorite shows is "Deadwood" .. which is cut from much of the same cloth as "Hell on Wheels"
If you enjoy a wonderful story, with a flawed lead character that eventually finds some form of redemption at the end, give it a try .. and while you're at it, "Deadwood" is more than worth the time as well, although the last season really did not tie it up as well as it could have been .. just don't bring in the kids/grandkids ..
