Geno,

Nice letter! That hopefully will garner some attention.

It's so frustrating that the media parrot bad info. Where are the ol' fashioned 'reporters' that actually went out and did a lil' diggin', as opposed to relying on the web? There's soooo much info in our favor; but yet, it's easier to use fingers, cut & paste as opposed to leather!

Reporters? Therein lies the problem. They're all reporters. The JOURNALIST used to do the digging. Problem is, they don't exist anymore. :(

I'd be very happy if they just brought editors back at this point. :grr:

Howdy good Folks,

I'd like to ask anyone who will to proofread the following letter I plan to submit to the news director of one of my local newscasts.

I am open to any and all suggestions, additions, or corrections... especially of facts etc.

Mr. X,

A few minutes ago I watched yet another negative news story about e-cigarettes on your 6pm news show.

I’d like to suggest that if you’re going to run stories about things that pertain to human health, have your reporters do some real research.

Instead of parroting junk science studies that you get “off the wire” and showing close-ups of women’s’ lips while they’re puffing on an ecig, use internet search engines; read internet forums related to e-cigarettes; or even interview real, local people who are using e-cigarettes to successfully quit smoking tobacco cigarettes. I did, my wife did, and I know of many others who have also quit smoking – by using e-cigarettes as a substitute. Statistically, the success rate using e-cigarettes is much higher than nicotine patches, gum, or drugs like Chantix.

The news article on your program quoted a study which said that 60% of people who tried to quit smoking using e-cigarettes failed. That is patently false and can be proven so by empirical evidence… IF one does the research.

On April 27th, 2013, I got my first e-cigarette and have not bought a pack of tobacco cigarettes since. Yes, in the first 2-3 months, I had moments of weakness and “bummed” a cigarette from a smoker friend… but soon the craving for even the occasional cigarette subsided and eventually went away. A few months later, my wife decided to try e-cigs and still has the same unopened pack of tobacco cigarettes she had bought that day -- she has not smoked even one since.

Are e-cigarettes 100% safe? Probably not. Breathing anything other than clean, pure air is not “good” for you, but anyone who lives in a city or near a busy highway is not breathing clean, pure air all the time either. I see e-cigarettes as “harm reduction”, as opposed to inhaling the thousands of chemicals in tobacco cigarettes.

I have thoroughly researched both the hardware and the e-liquid used in e-cigarettes, mix my own e-liquid with FDA approved-for-human consumption ingredients, USP certified, and I know exactly what it is I’m inhaling… something I never could say when smoking chemically engineered tobacco.

You want to do your viewers a real service? Try encouraging them to quit smoking by running some positive stories about e-cigarettes.

Thank you,

My Name

Sounds good to me!

I agree with the comments made by Ken and Tutu regarding your letter, Uman. So hard to temper the fire for the letter writer, so easy to see where it needs tempering for those of us who didn't write it. Great spirit and principle!

An additional suggestion I'll make even if it draws fire is that I'd say that the FDA has approved joose ingredients for ingestion rather than using the word consumption, which avoids (to my mind) someone saying that vapor inhalation is different from consumption. Not terribly important, just my opinion.

Now, I wonder where someone might find a picture of iffy?

I wonder how many more times I can say Iffy before I quit typing. Iffy, how many times to YOU think I can type Iffy? hehehe

I saw you posted, came in to see what it was, saw your picture and, no joke, my computer completely crashed. Melodramatic timing on its part. Boy I bet you can make a mean twisted wire and give good back rubs!

Deb, if it makes you feel any better, I confuse me too. Ken, I do remember those pictures but then someone said it wasn’t Iffy. I either missed or forgot (happening less often but still happens) the “updated” photo. My bad. Rockin’ dancing Snoopy/Iffy!

I think I want some of what Debadoo is vaping

Me too, even if it is a little iffy.

When my computer crashed, I had up a bunch of articles looking for a quote for Uman. When they all went, I'd only save one paragraph. The following is an excerpt from a story about antidepressants and only mentions Chantix in passing, but still blew my tiny mind. Bold is mine.

The evidence linking antidepressants and violence continues to mount. A 2010 study published in PloS One analyzed adverse drug event reports submitted to the FDA for a five-year period. Only drugs for which at least 200 adverse events were reported were included in the analysis — a total of 484 drugs in all, 11 of which were antidepressants. For each drug, the authors tabulated the incidence of violence case reports, which they defined as physical abuse, physical assault, homicidal ideation and homicide. For the majority of these 484 drugs, there were no violence case reports. For most of the rest, there were only one or two such reports. The 11 antidepressants stood out from the pack with a whopping 578 violence case reports, or 30 percent of the total. The proportion of violence cases reported for these drugs was eight times the average of all other drugs. Only the stop-smoking drug Chantix had a stronger violence signal.

lol tutu....I confuse myself too and everyone around me.

wow.......I never would take chantix or well butrin or any of those........but yeah they'll defend those drugs to the hilt, but folks can't get pain meds when they need em.....and lets outlaw vaping. View attachment 427223

I took Wellbutrin, not fun at all. I smoked like a chimney just trying to stay awake. I was not a happy camper on that stuff. I love your View attachment 427223

Rather than a bunch of multi-quotes, I'll just give everyone a collective Thank You! for critiquing my letter.

And after re-reading it, you're all right... it did come across as somewhat "angry" -- because I was! I got up immediately, skipped the local weather segment, the national news, and most of Jeopardy while writing it! And it takes something "big" to make me skip Jeopardy.

I'll incorporate all the suggestions/edits, tone it down, add some links, and reread it again tomorrow morning after it gets a little "cold" again.

Later Gators...

Is the Iffy picture in question the picture of the hula dancer that some of you tried, now unsuccessfully, to block out?

Unrelated sidebar: David O, I haven't forgotten ya, just been slow.

It's a picture of Flowersoul's husband that they confused with Iffy. And that was AFTER I posted my pictures. :D
