As I understand it boosting voltage is less efficient than bucking in DC/DC regulators. What I would like to know is by what percentage. I tried googling it and couldn't find any specific numbers, only that there is not that much difference between them.

Buck vs boost
You can more easily drive your Corvette at 50MPH then your Kia at 120MPH.
8.4 volts EASILY scales back (bucks) to 5 volts output
4.2 volts must be "boosted" to reach 5 volts output.
The Buck is more efficient.

How is the signal being bucked? What chip or circuit is doing the buck?

Provape claims it's buck/boost circuit is more then 90% efficient.

Google fuelled Opinion to follow:

I would speculate that Buck VS Boost efficiency might differ by 5 to 7 percent. (Buck @95% efficient VS Boost @88% efficient)
