I'm totally dreaming, but if I had the opportunity to obtain one of these:

Samsung Dart Android No-Contract T-Mobile Smartphone with GPS and 3MP Camera at HSN.com

no-contract Smart Phone...would I have to get internet at home or could I get on the internet with it with WiFi? Does that even make sense? Elucidate me, oh geeky ones.

I'm totally dreaming, because you asked about something I've researched extensively this year. Not just for myself, but my DS was like speed-dating mobile carriers this year. I had her apply for a Safelink phone which she got but it's only a TracFone with 250 monthly minutes. She's currently on Net10 with a Samsung T401G, just $50 for unlimited everything, but it's no smartphone. DH and I left VZW after 15 years and went with T-Mobile pre-paid. We both chose the LG Optimus T, although twin phones were not the original plan. $50 unlimited prepaid TTW, and I can't believe I didn't do this two years ago when our last contract expired!

For that price you could buy the thingy ma bob USB from Virgin Mobile or someone for pay as ya go with no contract fer internet anywheres too Kittypies. That is ,iffin ya don't be wanting the phone itself  I dunno your situations, but I seen them things at Walmarts even :smokie:

Yes, the VM USB router! I told my DS she should get this for her netbook cause the neighbor she used to piggyback from (with permission) moved. This item should be purchased at Walmart because the serial numbers on those devices are Walmart-coded and as such, when you buy the $20 mobile broadband top-up you get 1GB of data for 30 days. When you buy the broadband device elsewhere, the $20 top-up only gets you 500MB of data! Half! This does not help the phone problem, though.

You can get on the web with their 3G network. WiFi is something the place you are or your home has to have in order for you to access. I have a Blackberry and I'm on T-Mobile and I can use their network anywhere or my home WiFi or WiFi wherever I go if they have it.
I have heard good things about Walmart's Straight Talk phones/plans. Check them out.
Walmart.com: Electronics: No-Contract Phones & Plans

Wow, ST has an Android phone now! At least it came up after entering my zip code. The phone offerings vary depending on where you are located.

Oh, I would definitely ask him first. From what y'all are saying, I would not have to order internet service for my home in order to connect to the net with this phone, correct?

So, does this look like a decent smart phone? Is the price reasonable? The "plan" is $45/mo for unlimited data. I am mainly interested in this phone from this particular vendor because I would be able to pay the purchase price in four equal monthly installments.

You don't need internet access at home to browse the internet using your phone. It will use the mobile carrier's 2/3/4G network for that. For more flexibility and coolness factor, the phone itself should have a WIFI feature built-in as an alternate way of accessing the internet without using 3G. I am connected to my home WIFI all the time but I can use 3G at home too, and when I'm out I have the choice of connecting with free WIFI or TMo's 3G network. If you were trying to browse in a moving car, only 3G would work.

Do you have a laptop? There are two ways to connect to the internet using your smartphone as a modem using 3G. There is 'USB tethering', and there is 'mobile WIFI hotspot'. This has to be a feature on the phone and also a feature supported by the carrier. I was able to use the hotspot feature at my sister's and it was great!

I buy the refill PINs on CallingMart for under face value and NO TAX, so I pay less than the $50 but I get full credit for the $50. :p

Voice coverage and data coverage is more important than any of the above, so check coverage maps on the carrier's website first, and then choose a phone/plan. Don't forget BYOD (bring your own device) some carriers allow it (TMo does) so you can buy a new or used phone (Craigslist/Ebay/Friend) and then purchase a TMo SIM card to activate it.

I have a spreadsheet on MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) I could PM you if you'd like Kitty, even though you are a winter-lover and all. :glare:

You have single-handedly just saved the reputation of the entire state of NJ.

Now, being the back'ards Southern redneck that I am, Imma have to go read that again because all of a sudden I got dizzy :D

(oh, and no laptop. I gave mine to my niece when I moved to my duplex 6 years ago because I had to choose between internet and cable and I chose cable)

(oh, and are you saying if I have the opportunity, the phone I linked to would be a reasonable choice?)

(oh, and please PM me the spreadsheet)

May the sun shine with splendor on NJ and the temperature never get below 72 degrees! :D

I NEVER set out to do any such thing. I am a 'native New Yorker' and my high heels back then got a workout during that song. Sorry to the NJ natives including my DH, but you have to save the State's reputation by yourselves! :glare:

According to TMo, USB tethering and portable WIFI is supported on the Samsung Dart, as it is on the LG Optimus T (which you should look at - I'm in love with this phone!). Reasonable choice? Yes, but I chose the Optimus because of the sharper resolution.

PM coming at ya - stay tuned!

I agree with the final sentiment on behalf of all the Jersey people that surround me. You don't wanna piss dose guys off.

Yeah just like others said you will not need a wifi connection to access the web with a smartphone. However it will be slow. Wifi connection will be faster but the phone needs to have that capability. However I have no idea abt payg plans. I've always uswd contracts and since I've been with VZW for over 10 yrs now a two year contract means nothing to me.
SLow ? why would it be slow ? my OLD 3G works as fast as my toshiba laptop or any wifi ....huh ?????

Oh yeah we got 3g. No 4g here yet but my phone definitely is running on 3g and I love vzw because I get digital reception everywhere. I'm always letting other ppl use my phone cuz theirs doesn't work.

Yeah mine is a hassle cause I live in a rural area .I get reception in town but not on coast ,son gets reception with his virgin mobile on the coast but not in town lol
Depends on where your towers are for your service .ATT is putting new towers down our windy hwy but as i understand tmobile will not be leasing the service so i am switching to virgin when contract up ...bout 35.00 for monthly instead of about 75 i am paying for tmobile .
Cant go with att because i hate them .

Virgin runs on Sprint and so does Boost Mobile. Boost is a good option if the coverage works for you. Don't get an 'iden series' phone cause they are really Nextel and are being phased out. Your $35 @Virgin will get you 300 voice minutes (as you know) but Boost is unlimited TTW starting @$50 and going DOWN to $35 after 18 months of on-time payments. You see the first $5 come off after 6 months, the 2nd $5 after 12 months, etc. They call it 'shrinkage.'

Virgin has a good deal too for $35 and the way to get around the 300 minute limit (if the need arises) is to use a smartphone that supports WIFI calling so you use your unlimited DATA for outgoing calls and they don't count towards your minute allowance.
