From Wikipedia...

The electronic cigarette concept first appeared in a patent acquired by Herbert A. Gilbert in 1963.[6] The device was described as, "...a smokeless non-tobacco cigarette ... to provide a safe and harmless means for and method of smoking by replacing burning tobacco and paper with heated, moist, flavored air..." Due to the limitations of technology available at the time, and because tobacco was not yet generally accepted as harmful, this device never reached manufacturing.

The modern electronic cigarette was invented by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and introduced to the market the following year. The company he worked for, Golden Dragon Holdings, changed its name to Ruyan (meaning "to resemble smoking"), and started exporting its products in 2005–2006,[7] before receiving the first international patent in 2007.[8]

Some day Hon Lik will get a Nobel Prize.

This is information I never considered but after reading the question I decided to do some extensive googling. Quite interesting. I am totally embracing this new alternative to smoking as a hobby. Going to my local gas station didnt have the same excitement as my new PV or new tank coming in the mail. It truely is a Godsend for me and many many others. I hope that the market remain outside of the governments reach for some time to come. We shall see.

Not for nothing but I wonder if some of these things the FDA and even Govt officials would be held up in a way if proven the vaporizers have been around this long ? isnt there some law that the FDA is upholding against us going back to 1996-7 or something that nothing after this date, something or other ? I know this is vague but I remember seeing something in regards to ecigs and nothing past a certain date is one of the laws the FDA uses against ecigs, this could be another good reason to call them vaporizers.

I think the year is 2007 and I think it is part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA) and that it would potentially apply to electronic cigarettes if the FDA were to issue deeming regulations. But I'm pretty sure the Chapter IX regulations in the FSPTCA indicate that products "marketed" prior to 2007 would be exempted, not products theoretically in existence or capable of being in existence.
