Overwhelmed Newbie Needs Help--Asking for a recommendation

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on here for about a week, and it's time to come out of the shadows! I was first introduced to e-cigs about 8 months ago when a friend showed me his. Then recently my mother was told about these forums and mentioned them to me. I am highly interested in them but there is SO much information here, and on many other websites, that I am extremely overwhelmed and need your help!

I just turned 34 in Oct. and have been smoking since I was 16, although I remember my first cigarette at about age 13-14. Even though smoking has been a contributing factor into the deaths of 3 of my loved ones, I have yet been unable to quit after countless tries. (I did quit once, for 4 months.)

2 months ago I was smoking 1 to 1.5 packs a day of Marlboro Lights. I am currently averaging about 10-12 cigs a day of Doral Ultra Lights. My ex-husband, and dear friend, is also interested in e-cigs. He smokes 3/4 to 1 pack a day of Marlboro Menthols.

As I said earlier, I am extremely overwhelmed by information, and I need your help. If you wouldn't mind taking a moment or two to answer just a few quick questions, I would greatly appreciate it.

A. juice recommendations for the equivalent of what we are currently smoking.

B. E-Cig recommendations. I have done a lot of reading. Throat hit is no concern, color is no concern, size is big concern! I'm looking for an automatic (no buttons!) that is very close in size to a standard analog cigarette w/ good battery life. (I am self-employed and in my car 50% of each day, and he is full-time National Guard Computer Tech who works 10-12 hrs a day.)

C. Vendor/Supplier recommendations, that are relatively close to Georgia/Alabama if possible.

D. Starter recommendations. (ie. Should I get just one, or 2, to start for each of us? Etc.)

I will be visiting a mall kiosk this afternoon or tomorrow, just to check them out in person, but plan on purchasing online to find better pricing, however time is starting to get thin as my goals are to "Go Vapor/Stop Smoking" by Christmas/New Year's at latest.

Thank you so much in advance for your assistance. I have read a lot in the newbie section, but again, multiple threads and multiple websites have seriously overwhelmed me, so having it in one thread would be a huge help!

Hello Jennifer and welcome to ECF.

A. Juice recommendations
We do not know enough about the body’s absorption of e-liquid to say for sure, users vary a great deal. Most use a selection of strengths, with stronger liquid when they need more of a hit such as in the morning and after meals. I would recommend starting with a selection of strngths, but trying lower and then increasing is better than starting too strong.

B. E-Cig recommendations
This is a very personal thing. Is how it looks important? Battery life? Visible vapor production? Flavour? Convenience? Cost?
Most people using e-cigs for the first time want something similar to a cigarette. Most popular 3 peice model at this size is the Joye 510. Battery life for the average user will be about 2-4 hours. The cartridge holds about 6 cigarettes worth of liquid. For larger cartridges, look at the 801/penstyle model with a larger atomizer, the cartridge holds about 10 cigarettes worth of liquid. For longer battery life, look at the ‘mod’ style devices. For an easy to use model, look at the 2-part try the KR808D-1 or Greencig.

C. Vendor/Supplier recommendations
I will not recommend a vendor. Look for feedback on the forums before making a decision.

D. Starter recommendations.
Again this is a personal thing. Many users try a few models before finding a model they like and suits their needs.

I echo Frog Andy's welcome!

Just a couple additions from a fellow Yank to that British guy's wise answers:

  • You started your post with: "Hello everyone." Do you realize that posts on this new "Ask the Experts" forum within ECF are addressed by just a tiny portion of the ECF membership, a handful of "experts"? As a group, we probably are more knowledgeable than the average ECF member, but we are not omniscient. You may want to supplement the answers you receive here, by posting (portions of) your query in the New Members forum and/or as a reply to a thread in any other relevant forum.
  • You said: "...there is SO much information here, and on many other websites, that I am extremely overwhelmed..." You are not alone in that! That's why I put together that WWV Illustrated Guide referenced in my signature (and which you will find in the New Members forum). It is an attempt at consolidating highlights of the useful but overwhelming information here on ECF.
Finally (from me) a suggestion: Let the mall kiosk people give you a chance to sample the vaping experience ... but compare their prices with what you will find from suppliers who participate in ECF, prior to purchasing.

Again, welcome to vaping and to ECF!
