Well I'm finally getting that rain i was saying we needed here,,,,,,,,,and it came with a tornado warning
If your computer's data ( pictures, videos, music, documents of various types ) is of any importance to you ... you had better back it up to at least one other location NOT in your computer.
One of my clients, in the same building that I'm in, lost an external hard drive about 4 years ago and got lucky, the electronics in the external box had gone bad but the drive inside still worked so I installed it into his computer at the time. I also mentioned that he should have other backups in addition ( pretty much a standard thing I preach anytime I get the chance ). A year later, give or take... the replacement external drive he had gotten ended up being corrupted for whatever reason, he got lucky ( and I told him so ) and I got all of the data back that time. Of course I took the opportunity to get on my soapbox and praise the good practice of having more than just one copy of the files again.
Got a call this morning from this client, he once again lost the external hard drive. I mentioned that if we get lucky again, he should backup more than one place and then I took the drive up to my office to start working to see what I could recover. None of my data recovery tools that I owned were touching the problem and nothing saw any data at all. I knew of an even higher end data recovery software ( that I had never needed before in the last 20 some years ) that allowed me to demo it and it'd show the files it could find before deciding to purchase it. On it's "quick run", it listed only finding 50 files... so I called my client and explained what I was seeing and mentioned there was still a slight chance that the software's deep scan ( which takes forever btw ) may be able to get more but it was uncertain. I also offered that as long as I got to keep the software when done and he'd pay for the previous hour worth of work... that any further labor would be on me and I quoted the total for everything... he winced but gave the approval to go ahead.
So far... I know I've gotten 50 files back... it'll be tomorrow before I know if the deep scan get's him any more or not.
So... I say to everyone... backup, backup, backup. I don't mind my clients paying me to try to recover their data but the cost of an additional hard drive and the time to copy your data to at least a second location is far cheaper than paying me to only maybe get a portion of your data back.

Now that sucks.... I just saw that some storm chasers were in Nebraska waiting on things to drop... and it's looking like they've got a good chance of it judging the wall cloud I was seeing in the video stream

I hope I pass like that. Nice and easy & quiet. She's lucky she went like that in my opinion. Not that she should have gone but you know what I mean
