In general, the electronics of an item "could" hold a patent - but being relatively simple and generally within the common market, it may not qualify. As DJ mentioned, the name of something can be copyrighted/Trademarked, but a recipe cannot - only the exact wording of the recipe and/or ingredients would hold up (think "I Hate to Cook Book").
