I got 2 Visa cards from 2 different banks of which I make sure I zero the balance at the end of every month (which isn't easy with DW). AMEX never offered me a card which is fine by me but always wondered why not. My credit is very good and with zero balance on both cards with credit limit enough to almost buy any new car I want out right. I know it's petty but I'd like the chance to turn them down.

Well Gil, I obviously have a business relationship with Amex. They may have a "friends and family" program within which I could recommend you and thereby give you the opportunity to turn them down. Just let me know.:)

my first CC was an amex. i received it the day before i flew to my first business trip. newbie that i was, i made the mistake of mentioning that at one of chicago's finest steakhouses at a party including 11 more senior employees. the bill was.... staggering.

at first the V.P. of finance refused to honor my expense report. i literally had to end up blackmailing him with polaroids of him having a grand old time on Rush Street, which was pretty racy back in the day

i don't miss amex one bit

That's amazing. The only brick-mortar place I've ever had my Amex card refused was for gas at a neighboring Native-American owned gas station. I've used it to eat out at both chain and independantly owned restaurants many times without a hitch.

Amex has always been the odd man out with payment processing - it started as a 'credit club', thus the "member since XXXX" printing on the front of the card; you also used to have to pay off the entire balance each month. It's handled differently than Visa or MCard and often has a higher merchant fee. This has meant that shops, restaurants, hotels, and such really prefer that you don't use it as they get charged a higher fee. Amex is also more paranoid about fraud and are quicker to refuse transactions.

Yes, my wife and I did some road-trippin' last weekend and after the 3rd gas-tank fill-up in a day, my card wouldn't allow me to pay at the pump any more. Had to go inside. Folks in the station said it was an Amex thing. No big deal, swiped my card inside and was on my way. 3 % more on my year-end rabate.:)

Not sure what I'll do. I have a pay as you go Bluebird card. (amex) I've used to fund Roes via PayPal connected to it. I have a VVG I need to send to the spa and get a few other items. Just wonder how billing for that would go.
I can still send invoices through paypal not a problem
