We somehow inherited a baby bird that we figured would go back to the wild when he was old enough. Used to wake us up at night pounding on the wall like a woodpecker, dubbed him Pecker Head. 
Full grown he only weighed a couple of ounces, pretty much ran the house and lorded over our 100 pound dog. He was quite the character and usually went on vacation with us. Turned out he was a starling and not right in the head, never could release him back to the wild. Years later after he passed, the house still seems so empty and quiet. He was a complete ditz and I miss him terribly to this day.
It's amazing how such tiny creatures can leave such a large hole in your heart.I loved watching Max pitch him temper tantrum
I once had a parakeet named Rudy-Roo. He was an independent little guy but I am thinking he loved his mom almost as much as his mom loved him. He actually chose me so that might have added to our attachment.
He could talk up a storm and had quite a list of phrases. He proved to me that he knew and understood what he was saying. Hubby was a truck driver back during that time. I heard his truck pull off the highway one day and as usual Rudy was on my shoulder. I just said "I guess it is time for daddy to come home". He made the connection and every time he heard the truck he would stop what he was doing, fly to the window facing where the truck was parked and say "time for daddy to come home". He never picked up "daddy's home" though
