So are you guys sure that the stuff that just says Glycerine at Walgreen's is VG - I figured it was ok but there are many kinds of Glycerine other than Vegetable - What is that other 1%? - I think I'll stick to the ones that say %100 Pure FOOD GRADE - You could also say that you've been eating small amounts of rat poison for a while and not noticed anything - but that don't make it good for you -

i did a bit of googling (i know not everything you read on the in-tard-web is accurate) and found that u.s.p. and f.a.a (food grade) glycerine are almost identical. i say almost b/c u.s.p. and f.a.a. dont make the glycerine they are simply quality regulation organizations, and there standards are nearly identical. that being said no two manufacturers of glycerine will come up with completely identical products, that extra 1% is unavoidable. some manufactures may put 100% food grade glycerine, but that just means that its 100% edible.
these companies have to pay any company that they choose to regulate their glycerine and production facilities. so if a company want to market something for just skin use (u.s.p glycerine) then they dont have to go thru extra steps and extra money to contact the f.a.a. as well. but in the end the regulations by both organizations is considerably the the same.

it seems that even food aditives/skin emollients are subject to politics as well.

its just the same as the whole ethol alcohol vs isproyl alcohol as rubbing alcohol. by definition they are completely diff, one is fit for human consumption and the other is not. but due to expences and alcohol taxes (ethol alcohol sold as rubbing alcohol being exempt) all u.s sold rubbing alcohol is just ethol alcohol with additives to make it unfit for human consumption (therefore alcohol tax exempt). even "isporyl" is ethol. look into it.

but if you find glycerine that doensnt have u.s.p., f.a.a. or food grade written on it then your probably looking at technical grade glycerine and it isnt regulated at all. DO NOT use it for mixing.

actually i found that the U.S.P. upped there standards for glycerine in the beggining of this year. it was already suitable for human consumption but ....... more heavily regulated standards = more money for the U.S.P. regulators.

anywho thats what i got from a few hrs of googling.;)

I just walked up to the Walgreens pharmacist and asked if they had any PG. She checked and pulled out a 1 pint bottle and asked "You want the whole thing?". I said sure! She said it was about $8 and asked if that was alright. Again... I said sure! While she was ringing it up she asked if this was something I would need often, and that she could order it for me. I told her it should last me a while, but thanks for the offer. 4 minutes, in and out.

Your mom said not to say...
Go here to get wholesale prices on anything from 1 pint @ $12.00 to 55 gal drums @ $935.00. I would think those amounts would be enough for any mad mixologist!!

http://www.chemistrystore.com/Chemicals_G_R-Propylene_Glycol.html

I also have found this place which has free shipping and states that it is food grade right up front. $19.99 and up same deal with the sizes, 16oz to 55 gal. Slightly higher but free shipping negates it.

Walmart and Walgreens both gave an emphatic "NO" when I asked about Propylene Glycol, USP.

RiteAid didn't have it in the store, but they were quite willing to order it, no questions asked. It was there by the next day, $12.37 for one pint.

They also told me that if I needed more, I could call it in to them and they'd order it for next day.

I think I've found a new favorite drug store. :D

Primal---you just have to get the right Pharmacist at Walmart as they can and will order it for you---you might have to have a repore with one of them, but they can order PG for you.

The original poster asked about PG, not VG. (VG is easy to get, I get it at Hobby Lobby, $2.18 for 2 ounces (59/cc).

PG is impossible to find....and I'm not driving 100 miles to the next tractor store, whatever that is. The only pharmacy I asked was very suspicious....
I didn't know then to say my husband needed it to cure his cow or some such thing. I finally gave up and bought a gallon of Distilled Water. It works great to dilute the thick VG. For a simple no-nicotine recipe I just use 4 ml VG, 8 drops distilled water, and 15 or 20 drops of flavor. (Correction: Bones did give a link to where we can get PG online, which I appreciate!)

The VG makes up the bulk of my juice. So the recipe above will make about 15 small bottles of juice, which will last me a looong time. The flavors I like are Capella's hazelnut, pralines and cream, graham cracker, and vanilla custard from Happy Vapor. Now if that's not off-topic, I don't know what is. :D

All you have to do is tell the pharmacist that you want it for your humidifier---it is not a big deal when you tell them that. Hospitals have been using PG in humitifiers for years.

A few Walgreens gave me a hard time and then the last one told me that their supplier was out. I was able to order some PG from a Safeway pharmacist with no trouble at all but it wasn't the cheapest I found.

It really does depend on the pharmacist. Some just do not what to place the order and are lazy. If you are having that much of an issue, ask your Doctor next time you see them for a script--then there is no messing around.

A I found it interesting you could order a 55 gallon drum of PG, I followed the link.
On that site I noticed the partial ingredient list included something called "Solar Winter Ban". Besides sounding like a punk rock band, I Googled the name. The first link lead me here: Chemical Database: Propylene glycol (EnvironmentalChemistry.com)

At the bottom of that page, they list Propylene Glycol with the following attributes:
Health & Regulatory Guidelines

* EPA Regulations:
o Marine Polutant: No
* NFPA 704 Rating:
o Health Hazardard Rating: 0
o Fire Hazardard Rating: 1
o Reactivity Hazardard Rating: 0
* Health Risks: Harmful

I am not sure what to make of this, so I bring it here hoping someone could help me understand.

Many years ago I was looking for PropolyneGlycol for a "tuppadore" Essentially PG mixed 50/50 with distilled water is the solution for maintaining proper humidity in a cigar humidor.

I went to a local compounding pharmacy and asked for it. I forget, may have been second or third place I went to.

The pharmacist asked me "are you making your own suppositories"????

thewomenfolk, what do you use for flavor in your no-nicotine vanilla juice? Vanilla's my favorite, and I'm hopefully someday going to work my way down to 0 nic.
