Haven't started making my own coils yet but have a question for when I do. Have noticed nearly everyone seems to be shooting for 1.5ohm or less and I'm wondering why one wouldn't go for 6 or 7 wraps on the wick and shoot for 3ohm to be used at a higher voltage on something like the VMax. Seems like the extra wraps would produce more vapor much the same as a dual coil? I can see where the extra coils could suck the juice out of the wick faster than it could recover for a heavy vapor but is there a valid reason other than that?

Errol

I wrap my coils at about 5-7 wraps. Seems to just work better at about 2.2-2.7 ohms

Still using this method on my phoenix clone. Got it at 7.4 volts with a 3 ohm wrap on roughstack, opened the airhole, It is my best experienced vapers mod. Vapor production is unbelievable, throat hit is tolerable but full and very warm. That is a little over 18 watts. I did not think I would like such a high voltage vape, but this one performs awesome. If you have the ability, I definately recommend giving this a shot. Much more power than 6volts on the gripper.

I still use this method at it's core for making my coils on my Phoenix, but I made one change. Instead of a drill bit, I use a threaded shaft I bought at Lowes. Wrap the wire into the threads and you get a really nice tight coil. Then mount, then you just unscrew the shaft from the coil. Squeeze a little with some tweezers or pliers to tighten up the spacing a little and boom! I get around 2.0 all the time, and still use cheesecloth wicks, I twist the wicks as I am putting them in, seems to help get them to go down, then I really pack it into the juice well area ... easily get 15 drops of juice every time.

I'd love to get some feedback on this method, and any improvements offered would be awesome!

Very nice work-----When i first got mine i opened the hole a-bit-----and put in a cotton wick(#10 cotton square wick)--a bigger o-ring so i could line up the air hole with the wick---and it worked pretty good--but it gumed up alot,so i put in a 3mm silica wick(easier to clean)
I was wondering--how many vaps you were getting with your set-up?-----I took the #10 cotton wick and put some in the cover right above the air hole---just coiled it to the sides of the cover---then i took another piece about 1" and bent it in half and put it in the well vertically--just stood it up between the 3mm wick and the side of the well---i get about 40 vaps before i need to add more juice..

I'm burning through a ton of juice, cuz I'm running at 7.4 volts at 3ohm, 18.25 watts. I got tons of DIY juice though, so it does'nt matter to me. This is probably the best set up I have currently. This one would bring a smoker to their knees!

Update: I tried this with 1/0 cotton wicking and hit a problem: when I use the 1/32 drill bit, the coil's too small to insert the wicking through. However, i went up to the 1/8 drill bit and that one works! Unfortunately, that was as far as I got, because I can't see the hole I'm supposed to insert the wire into, much less actually thread it (an unfortunate side-effect of getting older, lol). As soon as I can get some magnification, I'll make it work!

Excellent tutorial and pictures! This is a great idea. I'm definitely trying it on my next recoil on my phoenix clone. Personally I've been using this unbleached 100% muslin cotton I got from a local fabric shop. Was like $2 for half a yard and I've gone through maybe a 3 inch square cut off it, it'll last a life time since most of that was used on trial and error in vivi nova heads and what not. It's a little tedious pulling the threads apart but once it gets going it's not too bad. Using about 80 threads in my wicks and no issues at all.

Ok so been vaping on a vertical coil in my phoenix clone all day now and absolutely love it. Got the cotton wick going up to the bottom of the drip tip and it's solved all my leaking issues and the problem of juice pooling on the sides. I found it easier to just wrap my coil/wick and fit it in, couldn't get the drill bit thing working right. Probably due to the fact I'm using threads of cotton instead of a braided wick. This'll be my setup from now on without a doubt.

Darkly...there are a few things you can try....

1 - the simplest is to just wrap your wire a few times around the upper screw for connection....I believe the Line works that way

2 - the most risky is to cut down the screw so it is the right length...cuttin is prob not a hard thing, but doin it so you dont bugger up the threads is where the risk is...
