I'm having horrible burnt taste on my phoenix too....i trashed the stock wick n coil..made my own...it worked...but still even with a lighter wrap then factory, i'm getting burned taste on my VV Ipro.
As a matter of fact , when i blew on it like someone suggested while dry burning it 4 seconds..the mother f'er caught on fire. @ 4.2 volts.
Not once...but everytime i dryburned it at say 4.4 volts with 4 wraps.

I made a third wick, this time wrapped it around a tiny screwdriver, then took it off, then i proceeded to twist the wire around the wick (like a drill drilling into the ground) and it wrapped around it perfectsly no (hotspots).

Was better, but afterawhile it just smells funky n nasty.

Also i noticed the plastic on the pos & neg posts, one side was melted...WTF? i think these things are crappy yo'.

I'm using on the ego bat now...no burnt taste, but not much flavor either.
So i'm sticking it in my drawer for now, until i can try making one from mesh.
.gonna try the SS mesh 325 tomorrow or whenever i can get my hands on some, and see that does any better.

It's my first time with rba...

--Does anyone know if i can get SS mesh at a hardware store or something like that? don't want to wait 3 days for an order.

thanks for any help.

Not sure if you've gotten a PM on this but Ive gotten the same thing! First two hits are OK and then it's either metal or just nasty. Even the juice in it smells bad when I open it up. I though the same thing too (use mesh), but it's not better. That, and the center post pulls up from the slighted pressure from the battery connection. Went one further and followed some guides online for creating a vertical coil between the posts to avoid any chance of something touch the plastic or posts - same thing (mesh and silica). Not sure what's up. I have a clone which may be the issue.

I'm looking into getting the XL version which looks to have a better overall design and more space to operate. I have to say, my Penelope may not be the easiest thing to build but I never got this. And why would you put plastic where things can potentially burn - what happened to ceramic? Even cheapo 510 atties don't do that!

In the "when I get bored/desperate" pile for now.

As for mesh, no stores in NYC have what we're looking for (type 316 or 316L ss mesh in 325 or 400). Got several 4x4 sheets from Mountainoakvapors.com for like $3.99/each. Not bad, but it took 4 days or so.

Let me know if you figure it out.

I had the exact same problem, and what ended up working for me was opening up the air hole. I used a saddle valve (same thing used to punch cartos) but a a burr would have worked a lot better.

After that it didn't matter how tight/loose, how many wraps, all my coils were working flawlessly and no more burn/plastic/dry taste.

Plastic taste gone and vapes well (if not too well, sucks through 15 drops of liquid in about the same amount of toots as 3 or 4 do on a regular 510 atty). But the flavor is fantastic, vapor production is insane and throat hit is good, possibly a bit much. This thing excels in extreme - utter crap when not working right, too good of a vape when it does :)

No fancy air hole widening, post pushing/pulling, etc. Just re-coiled carefully, avoiding the posts at all costs, fully tucking the wick underneath the coil so that none of the wicking material was touching the coil other than the wick passing through the coil and lifting the coil assembly high above the top of the liquid reservoir. That last bit is probably what did the trick as it: 1) avoids the excess wicking material from touching, prevents the coils from getting too close to the post and/or delrin insulators and, 3) prevents flooding issues. That's really it.

The ONLY remaining issue (other than I need to buy bigger bottles of juice to keep up with this thing) is that I find that not all my coils are getting hot - just the ones in the middle. I have about 5 to 6 wraps of 32awg on 3mm silica and I get about 1.3-1.4 ohms. I actually don't mind the low ohms, but it's obviously not what that many wraps should be. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?
