Thanks for the video.

This was actually what I have been thinking about of doing. Still waiting on my order ... Never done a rebuildable. But after reading the huge cotton thread and seeing a picture somewhere of a combination of mesh and a wick I think this is the best of both worlds

Great video. Thanks for sharing that. I have to agree with you concerning the screws and screwdriver.
I too, had heard you can get a screwdriver set at the Dollar Store. I made the trip and like you, had no luck.
Except I did see an eyeglass repair kit by the sunglass/ reading glass rack. It had a small slot and a small phillips head inside it.
It was 2 bucks so I figured I'd give it a shot. Works great. So check that out.

RippTripp,

I do mine a bit differently, I took my needle nose pliers and I turned each post so both the holes are facing me in the same direction on the connection post, this way when I go to put the coil wires in its very easy to do they both go straight threw in the same direction. Then I always raise up my coil just a bit so the hole in the top cap is sitting at the same height as the coil. when I put the cap on after my coil is made I loosen the cap just a smidgen so the hole is right behind the coil for the best air flow.

Rip turn those post so both holes are facing you so when you go to put your wire through those holes its very simple to do, and that air hole on the outer cap ends up being directly behind that coil and closer to it, try it, the air hole ends up being very close to the coil and it really makes a difference for me.

Allen screws and Allen Wrench would be best, they don't strip ;)

I did it! I am brand new to the phoenix and RA. This was my 3rd wick/wire assembly and I took some time with it but it fired up first try with no shorts that I can see. I tested the resistance on the provari and it came out at 1.7 ohm so I am very pleased with that. I have a couple of questions if someone is willing to help me out...

I tried to dry burn it very carefully to see if the coil would light starting in the center but I could tell right away that I was going to burn the cotton so I abandoned that effort. How do I tell if it is firing from the center of the coil?

Flavor seems very clean but it does not seem to be putting off as much vapor compared to the silica wicks I had made, is there a "break-in" period?

In this video I show you how to wrap a coil for the Phoenix rebuildable atomizer using stainless steel mesh and 100% unbleached cotton. Fantastic vape!

Just purchased mine. I can not wait to try. Your video is awesome. Great tutorial!

How do I tell if it is firing from the center of the coil?

Check the kanthal resistance before rolling, so if it matches or is close when finished, you are good to go. If you used 2.5 ohms worth of wire and ended up with 1.7 ohms, you have a short and the coil won't work well. What I also do is I wet the wick and coil with juice, and do very short 0.5 to 1 second firings. If there's a hot spot or one coil wrap doesn't get juice, it will show.

Flavor seems very clean but it does not seem to be putting off as much vapor compared to the silica wicks I had made, is there a "break-in" period?

Wicking on cotton is very sensitive to tightness. So if the cotton is too tight when wet and swollen, it will not wick well. Also, if the coil is too wet it won't vape well. Also, the thickness and width of the coil have a big effect on how it vapes. Too thin and the coil gets dry during each puff, too far apart and it won't get hot enough.

update... It appears that the ohm is fluctuating. It now reads 1.4

You have a short. Make sure the coil doesn't touch itself or the base posts, and move the coil windings carefully a bit with a needle or such. Wet burn and check for hot spots.

Edit: The comment on the airhole position is so true! I made don't know how many coils with lackluster performance until I figured out to set the air hole in correct position. Stupid design mistake in my mind. The new model has the same issue, although it will seal better when semi-open. The rebuildable Phoenix eGo tank attie also has the same issue, so I guess they just don't know.

I dont have an ohm meter and its just standard ego batts - do they do them with short circuit protection?

Multimeters are cheap, and might well save you a battery. It will also help you find partial shorts that wouldn't destroy anything, but the ato just wouldn't work as well as it should. Happens to me all the time, it's the unfortunate nature of SS in a coil.

I think my eGo-T battery has protection, but if I would rely on the short protection of a battery when doing coils, my battery would be resetting the protection in the charger very often. Could be a pretty dead battery by now.

So i ordered 2 rebuildable atomizers (a phoenix v1 and v2). I got them and tried them with the factory coils, HORRIBLE burnt taste, and i realized they wrapped the wire way too tightly around the wick. So i decided i'd give it a shot and build my own. First coil I built was a 1.9ohm (checked on the provari) ok i think, that's pretty good. I built the other one and it is around 1.3ohm, i have probably built around 5 working coils, free of hot spots and what not. But my issue is I cannot seem to get vapor production. I mean it's just not at all what i was thinking, the flavor is ok and stuff, but man there is just no vapor atleast not what im use to (use carto tanks), is there something i'm doing wrong? any advice? Please help I want so much for this to work.

Thanks
