It will be a fine lesson in self-control.

Here is the ratings for your coils:

    1.6 ohm Kanthal coil ....... 10-14 watts
    0.8 ohm Kanthal coil ...... 15-18 watts

As you can see, there is a minimum rating as well. If you vape below the minimum rating then the coil with not function very well, if at all....... In my many experiments I have tried to vape below recommended settings and it didn't work too swift...... On a few occasions I wasn't even able to produce any vapor ... You want to vape within the ranges listed for each type of coil that comes with your kit... You can go below the recommended rating when you are breaking in your coils and you should go below the recommended rating when breaking in the coil..... But after it gets broken in then try to stay withing the ratings range of the coil.

But keep in mind that even when you break the coil in properly, you will still get a funny cotton flavor.... This is normal and you will have that strange flavor until the wick starts to break in.

First communiqué from the trenches: I got my Kroma-A about an hour ago. When I popped out the installed coil, a black o ring pulled out with it. It seems to be an essential component, since when I reinserted the coil without it, it was clearly too loose. I replaced the o ring as best I could (it wasn't clear to me exactly where it was supposed to sit) and when I plugged the coil back in, it seemed to snug in nicely, so I was hopeful. Took it out again, primed it, reseated it, filled the tank, and waited about half an hour. Took my first, tentative puffs--starting small at 10W (I see from the above that I should've started lower) and 1 air hole open. The tank was very gurgly. Set it aside again for about fifteen minutes and took a couple more quick puffs. Gurgly still. I'm almost ready for my third go. Maybe it will be more quiet. Or maybe that o ring is in the wrong place.

The vape was quite harsh, which could be the weird new coil taste people talk about or a sign that my nicotine levels indeed need to drop.

    More anon.

A gurgly sound usually means a flooded tank. It may well be that the o-ring is the issue.

    Clearomizer Troubleshooting and Tips:

"Flooding" is a common occurrence in e-cigarettes. The definition of flooding is getting juice into the air passage of the tank. This can include any point between the mouth piece and the very bottom part that connects to the battery. Each tank has holes in that air passage, where the wicks pass through. This is required for the device to work properly. Unfortunately, this opens up the possibility for flooding. The trick with flooding, is knowing how to avoid it.

Improper Filling: When filling your tank, you have to be careful not to get juice into the center tube of the tank. This center tube is the air passage. When you take a draw, air comes from the bottom of the tank, through the air passage and into your mouth. If you get juice into this passage way, your tank is flooded.

Over Filling: If you over fill a tank (specifically a top coil like the ones that come with the starter kits and gift boxes), the wicks can become over saturated and just like a rain cloud, they will leak into the air passage. Once this happens, you have a flooded tank.

Pulling Too Hard: As I mentioned the wicks absorb the juice in the tank. As you pull on the device, you cause a vacuum effect that pulls juice into the wicks. If you pull too hard, you can pull in more juice then the coil can vaporize. If this happens, the juice leaks into the air passage and you have a flooded tank. Try a more gentle draw.

Temperature: E-Juice is a viscous liquid. Which means that as it warms up, it will thin out. And in the opposite form, it will thicken when it gets cold. When it thins, it is more difficult for the wicks to hold back the thin juice. This usually causes the wicks to over saturate and, you guessed it, it will leak into the air passage and you have a flooded tank.

Damage: There are o-rings and gaskets used that can wear out with usage. If certain ones fail or get lost, leaking will occur, in turn flooding the air passage and causing you to have a flooded tank. Other than accidentally losing something, damage can occur when its carried in a purse or a pocket or by over tightening the tank to the battery or over tightening the coil in the tank. Over tightening is a common cause of leaking due to the damage it creates.
"Dry" or "burnt" hits are also a common occurrence in e-cigarettes. This happens when an inadequate quantity of e-liquid reaches the coil. This can occur from using an e-liquid which is too thick for a tank, intake holes for the e-liquid being inadequate, or using a bad wick or coil. Doing "primer puffs", which is taking a puff or two without power on, may eliminate this phenomenon.

Should you determine that the o-ring is in the proper place, take the tank off of your mod, turn the tank upside down, and shake it towards the floor. This should remove any excess e-liquid in the air chamber. Alternatively, you could use a Q-Tip or rolled up paper towel down into the air chamber to absorb any excess.

A "harsh vape" could be a number of things. Too high nic used, too many watts used, too much Pg, inadequate air flow.

Sorry that your first vapes with your new setup were not what you planned. Be patient and persistant, you'll get this.

I suspect I flooded the coil when I was priming it--my dropper is rather clunky and the area that needs to be primed (which looks like mesh, which surprised me) is very tiny--and that accounts for the gurgling. Will it settle down?

Just checked. It already seems better. I dropped the wattage down to 8, and it's still more powerful than the G6--without my having to suck so hard it hurts my cheek muscles.

Where should the o ring go? Near the top of the opening or all the way down at the bottom?

P.S. I'm not worried about liking this thing. I can already see how it will be an improvement, and I quite like having a little robot sitting next to me. Much more friendly than a small tube.

I don't see an o-ring on the coil itself unless it is the black object where the threads are on the bottom.

If the o-ring belongs somewhere in the tank itself I'm afraid I can't help you. Someone more familiar with the tank will have to help you.

I believe the o ring in question is the black object you're seeing at the bottom. I should remove the coil again and see whether that's where it's sitting now. I hate to do it, since things seem to be going well now.

I should probably just let the the whole shebang sit overnight. Don't know if I'll have the patience, though.

Since things seem to be going well now, keep vaping. Sitting overnight isn't going to solve anything.

If the gurgling returns or if the tank begins to leak, then empty the tank and check for the o-ring placement.

In the meantime, give the other coils a good look inspection so that you know what they are supposed to look like.

Unfortunately, I had already removed the coil to check the o ring before I read your post. Couldn't get it to sit at the bottom; it seems to want to stay just below the lip of the opening. But when I reattached the tank, it seemed to vape just fine, so I guess I didn't screw anything up. If I wake to find the mod sitting in a puddle of goo, I'll be proved wrong.

I'm now at 10W and can't imagine going higher (though, in the interests of scientific exploration, I probably will crank it up to the max of 14W in 1W increments just to see what's what). The harshness is gone, and the nicotine level seems fine. Only time will tell if I got things going at a gentle enough pace. If my coil dies in two days, I guess I'll have my answer.

Experiment done. I won't be going higher than 10W. The vape got progressively harsher with each increase, there was more snapping, and I started getting heartburn.

In the monster Zenith thread, a lot of people said it took a tank or a tank and a half before the 1.6 coil began performing its best. Maybe it's because I'm coming from the G6, but I think it's pretty good now.

Oh, I just remembered I still have air flow to fool with. I'm at two now. . . . And (a bit later) two is where I'll be staying.

Just took a comparison hit off the G6. Intolerable. No flavor and a difficult draw. I'm converted and quite pleased.

I wonder what I'll think of the Pico 25?

It sounds like you got the newest version of the Zenith, which comes with the mesh coil preinstalled. I haven't personally used those yet, but other mesh coil tanks that I have have been superb.

I believe the mesh coil is a 0.5 ohm coil and supposedly better for flavour, and longevity.

Also, you can prime the actual juice holes on the sides of the coil, not just down the centre. I actually prefer to prime the juice holes, and check the centre for wetness without actually dripping any juice down the centre. That's just me though, but I do find it works well to ascertain how saturated (primed) the cotton is.

Dopey question: Do you turn your mod off if you're not going to be taking a hit for a few minutes? Or is there less wear and tear on the battery if you leave it on until you know you're done for the day?

Nope, it goes to sleep and will be fine.

Putting it into a purse or pocket though, I'd turn it off to prevent accidental firing.

It's stamped 1.6. Maybe it just looks meshy to my inexperienced eye.

@Zazie ... Glad to hear you got it running :) Yeah, any time you get a gurgling sound it means you have flooded the coil head which can happen if you over prime the coil head. Or it could be the O-ring that you mentioned. You will get the hang of it....... I knew you would like it compared to the G6 as there isn't even much of a comparison.

I definitely need to lower my nicotine, I've discovered. Combining a 30ml bottle of 0mg with a 100ml bottle of 12mg will yield a level of 8.4, which sounds about right. Pretty sure 6mg would be too low for me. If I'm wrong, I can always dilute with more 0mg, then buy 6mg juice from now on. (Halo really should offer a 9mg juice. I know, I know--there are approximately 97 trillion other sources, but I'm used to Halo and am going to stick with them for now.)

Just charged the Kroma-A for the first time and tried out pass-through vaping. The charging cord isn't quite long enough, but I can still lean to the side and puff at will. Guess I didn't need the Pico, after all. Never mind. I will simply have one mod dedicated to tobacco and the other to menthol. Luxury!

:rules: We always need a backup setup. In fact, its the first rule of vaping. Vape gear tends to break down occassionally, and you don't want to put yourself in a situation where you will buy cigarettes to quench your urge to smoke.

You will also need one for squonking, one for building, one for leaving the house, one for high wattage, one for high resistance endurance, one for the car, one for the patio, one for dripping flavours, one for friends, and a back up for each.
