the type of atomizer you have with your eGo makes some difference: standard 510 with a separate cone, Type A is one piece with the cone shape, Type B is straight sided and holds a lot of solution, and then there is the very recently introduced Tank system. there are several methods of getting the wick on the first three soaked quickly, but it sounds like you did that well enough...
it sounds like you have the Type A atomizer that came with your eGo kit, same as came with my starter kit. Four things you need to know about the eGo Type A system:
1) you will find the taste harsh when about 10 drops of fluid has been wicked out of a Type A cartridge that was topped off, probably because the the fluid does not flow out of it fast enough to keep up with the rate at which the atomizer is vaporizing the liquid.
2) you don't need to draw as long or push the button as long with the Type A atomizer compared to most other atomizers and cartomizers (the Type A heats faster than a standard 510, so i'm guessing it heats faster than your cartomizer.) the Type A atomizer has less "resistance" than a standard 510, meaning it's somewhere between a "regular resistance" atty and a "low resistance" atty you get a lot of vapor fast due to faster heating.
3) eGo attys Type A and Type B seem to work and taste better after a couple of days, after being "broken in", maybe because the wicking material under the bridge shrinks a little from the heat, letting the fluid flow faster.
4) the taste will improve after the atty is cleaned, there are many ways to clean an atomizer, and you can clean one before ever using it, but think about it before you do it. whether you have an automatic or push button will influence your decision.
I don't have enough space here to properly describe what I do to clean my atties, but it is a variant on the isopropyl alcohol soak, drain, and THOROUGHLY air dry method (isopropyl alcohol is much more toxic to the liver than 190 proof GRAIN neutral spirits, but the spirits are flammable and have other issues). do not try to dry out the eGo Type A atty by firing it without first priming it with more vaporizing solution or you risk burning the wick next to the heating coil (the dry burn method of cleaning an atty removes the wick under the bridge by burning the wick up completely as well as any residue that might be there; if you don't cause the heating element to break with this radical method, your atty will produce better tasting vapor, but it will vaporize liquid more slowly, requiring a longer heating time, making it relatively easy to burn the wick in the cartridge, after which you will think it better to drip... I won't be dry burning any more attys).
I will not use boiling water, plain or distilled water, or steam, each for different reasons, but vaping water vapor isn't going to cause a problem unless the wick under the bridge dries out.
