So my Maraxus is my daily beater and its starting to look pretty worn. I am in the process of removing the fading brass finish but wasn't quite getting my desired results. I've read that Easy Off oven cleaner takes off brass so I was planning on getting some to try out. Does anyone know what stores carry it? If not, has anyone else had experience removing brass?

Also I want to polish up the stainless steel and get out some of the micro scratches. What do you guys recommend? I have some 3000 grit sandpaper and steel wool. Would that work?

I just use a buffer. If you dont have one, there is a great brass polisher at Marshalls of all places.

Let me google that for you

Try looking for the gel too.

'Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish' ... that's all you need.

If you have some scratches in the metal that needs to be removed first ... Wet sand it with 800 grit wed or dry sandpaper wetted with a light oil such as 3 In 1 ... then wash with soap and polish with the Mothers.

3000 grit sandpaper is too fine to remove scratches in metal.

(Oven Cleaner will get you nowhere)

Will Mothers Mag remove the brass?

I was able to get most of the brass off using various sandpaper grits but there's still hard to reach places where I was hoping some kind of solvent would be able to do the job. I've seen many articles citing Easy Off Oven Cleaner for removing brass.

I don't understand your question ... Most brass items are made of solid brass.

Will Mothers remove brass? ... You must be talking about some kind of brass plateing that you want removed from the underlaying metal? Are you trying to strip this brass off?

Again, I have no idea what your talking about.

Easy Off is great for removing the patina off the brass in crevices. You will also need a little toothbrush to make sure it gets down in there. I recommended the gel because it sticks more. 20-30 mins should work in most case even with most stubborn patina.

Just make sure you know what you are using it for. You can't remove brass from brass. You can remove the patina from the brass. Mothers Mag, Brasso, sandpaper.. I have used 220-600 grit to 0 steel wool. Also Easy Off because I had some. Easy Off is common and easy to use. Depending on which you get make sure to wear gloves or wash off right a way it will eat through you.

OP .... I can't read your mind, but after reading your original post, I think all you are wanting to do is shine up your old discolored and tarnished brass mod. You want to make it look the same as when it was new.

The photo below is a before and after I just found on the internet, but this basically is what your trying to achieve.

Forget the Oven Cleaner, Forget the Solvent, and Forget the Steel Wool ... Go to any auto parts store or to the automotive section of Walmart and buy yourself a can of Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish ... Using a metal polish is the ONLY WAY your going to make your tarnished brass look new and shiny again .... I mean Real Real shiny again.

Of course, brass won't stay that way for long ... It will tarnish again unless it has had a hard clearcoat finish applied to it.
