I use a isopropanol soak. I have a half bottle that I drop it into - let it soak then shake it around and take it out.
I typically use this on computers, after thermal grease is fried on for several years its a pain to get off with anything other than isopropanol (especially because you can scrub a CPU without ruining it). It doesnt leave a residue, evaporates quickly, and cuts through any gunk without harming electrical components (assuming you let it dry!).

hmmmm, that just doesn't sound like a good idea since it can stay in the metal mesh under the atty pot. There isn't a way to guarantee that it is all gone. Isopropanol is toxic. Isopropyl alcohol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you won't put it in your mouth you shouldn't put it in your atomizer. Pure Grain Alcohol (EverClear) is a better choice.

as per that same wikipedia page....

"It is also relatively non-toxic and evaporates quickly."

Let it dry and its fine.

Also if you have a higher voltage mod, you could try some short dry burns on the Atty. That should burn off just about anything left over. Some say that is the very best way to clean the wires anyways.

It could burn the atty out though.

I stick with isopropanol... I never want to see everclear again. baaaaad... very bad night.

i use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner with boiling water. works great for me, but i have a high end commercial tank (for my jewelry business) i doubt that a consumer grade cleaner would do much, they cant even clean jewelry.

Isoprop is not something I'd drink, but I have a lot of stuff in the house I would not drink. It is harmless enough, though, to be used to sterilise medical equiptment, and is contained in some mouthwashes and the like. Also, it evaporates completely.
WIkipedia says, toxic symptoms can start at 15 gramms, hard to get those into your system when you just cleaned your attie with it. Or even come remotely close, for that matter.

Everclear or similar stuff is very heavily taxed in some places, here, for example. Hence, Isoprop is considerably cheaper, and just as safe. Because, frankly, I'd not drink pure Everclear, either.

Seems logical, and SOME drug stores carry 90% isopropal alcohol. BTW: Burning an atty for FIVE seconds to clean it on a "mod" does not burn it out, but it does clean it better then any other method. Here is a 19 page thread of "experimental" techniques, but the main one and safest is the "burn", if you have time to read it all.
