Here's one I just got done building... Not my usual type of coil but it's hitting really well, so I figured I'd share.

The specs...
Two strands of 30 awg Kanthal A-1
3/2 wrap
0.45 ~ 0.5 ohms

I'd describe it as inconsistant. The flavor is not as intense as my gennys or even my Terminator, but when it's having it's moments, it yelds a particularly creamy, smooth vape with lower TH. I'm guessing it has to do with the large surface area... which is why I tried this thing. Wicking is all over the place. First few drips and she's flooding. I have to keep the coil on top out of the gravity well. After a few vapes like that, I have to turn it on the down side. That's when it rocks at it's best. On the Prvari, it's throw up E1s now and then. I get tiny little spark hot spots from time to time. Probably didn't get to the inside of the mesh glove good enough with oxidation. On a mech mod, no problems... I guess I'm able to burn through those tiny sparks then it settles okay. Never burnt taste, only dry now and then.

Not at all blown away by it, but I feel a need to keep tinkering with it. I replaced the silica with a 'mattress' of oxidized ss mesh and it definitely tastes better. Still fidgity wicking though. Back to the drawing board :)

Alright, after fiddling around with horizontal coil set ups on my Bulldog/ Phoenix, this is what I found to ROCK out some vapor:

30 AWG Kanthal
7/8 wraps, all touching for a sweet, sweet 1.8ohms (can't do much lower really since I'm working with a Vamo (haven't gotten the funds yet to grab up a mech, just yet. Gotta convince the SO that a mech is an awesome present)
Using a cotton wick (gotta love those little cotton puff balls she keeps buying... all I need is the Kanthal and I'm good till forever with this thing!)

I've got a DID Mini clone that should be here tomorrow with some SS mesh and some more Kanthal to fiddle with... I wish I'd gotten one of the AGA T2's that were on sale at Vaporbank, but I missed them before they'd went out of stock

Looks solid. I notice you don't use akot of cotton. The times I've tried it, I end up using a ton. Maybe that's why I'm not thrilled with it. Do you find less is better?

The cotton needs to be loose through the coil before you put juice on it. It will swell once its saturated and touch the coil perfectly. Too much cotton and it chokes the wick. Takes some practice but my experiences with cotton is like you thought. Less is more.

Working on my new DID mini clone... gonna test some cotton in it I think..... (I dunno if a Bic will sufficiently oxidize a SS wick, so gonna wait on that till I can get to someplace that has torches).... Pics to follow...

(Might also give silica a whirl, since I have about 8 feet of the stuff (2.5mm))

A battery hahaha... No most of the time I'm switching between my Darwin and an itazte vv ... I have a method to pulse for the Petar k method with a straight battery but it's not feasible to use as a mec mod "hack together"

Most of the issue really is with wicking... The coils do their job but dry out the wick real quick

Yep. as you get below .8Ω on a genny, it requires the best wicking you can achieve. I was doing .6Ω with 7" 500ss rolled tight to 9/64" in a 5/32" wick hole. Then I made the 7 stranded ss mesh tube twisted rope. Got the same wicking results with ~1 1/2" of mesh. Nowadays I hit my .6Ω on the AGA with Nextel. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/rebuildable-atomizer-systems/398282-victory-over-aga-t.html

here's the Nextel . . ..

Latest and by far my best performing silica wick on an AGA-T2. 28AWG kantal A1 wrapped at least 15 times around 3mm wick clocking ~2.3ohm, and with the wick wrapped around the center post and back around the coil (twice.. just) for extra contact area. Used extra coil wire after the terminals to hold the wick in tight to the coils. Wick hole is drilled out to 3.5mm, and open fill hole to aid wicking. I'm running it at 6v and it's going like a train, but performs well down to about 4.5v.
