Pregnant Vapers!, caretakers of children under three! & all.

I am not a doctor nor a trained scientist, so double check with a phd scientist for interpretation of the following info &/or show it to your doctor to interpret. I did a wide ecig related community web search & see nothing about the following study. I also see many pages of search results here & on the net of women inquiring if vaping was/is safe during pregnancy [vape is totally safe propaganda & not no is seen in some replies to the inquirers. IMO NO! nor around very young ones, & those threads should maybe be amended to include a warning too as they may come up in google searches by pregnant women. Fog machines & Halloween porch displays should be avoided by them as well IMO. All PG products, as PG is absorbed into the blood through skin & foods contain it. [Yeah I am chicken little & IMO others should be too. read on--->]

Here is the page I found that I find extremely scary implications in:
Propylene Glycol produces excessive apoptosis in the developing mouse brain, alone and in combination with Phenobarbital

Note: Apoptosis = One type of cell death that sometimes is regenerative & positive or sometimes disease. What the following scientific document describes is implications of the latter [upon the little].

A small amount of natural apoptosis happens naturally each day to living humans. Cells often have clocks that tell them to die so new stuff can happen. The old highschool saying if one hold ones breath really long or gets drunk & one also kills some # of brain cells doing the activity, but its ok [so the adage goes] because they come back [is not the same on little ones cells natural apoptosis cycles that do not apparently recover in the above study] {rats in this study are the only physical evidence thus far, but the science makes logical sense for a humans of the vape/fog community to issue warnings / alerts / stickies & spread this info. IMO}.

Read the article or @ least attempt to read & digest the first & last paragraphs. Lots of doc sci jargon but the gist seems clear to mE.

A simplified breakdown as I read it is this. This study shows fetal rat brains are apparently having large areas of brain tissue die from a bad kind of apoptosis by way of PG alone in non expected low doses. The rats showed advanced brain cell death even when they did not get symptoms of drunkenness on the double alcohol. [PG in high enough doses has drunk-like harmful toxic effects.] The rats as they grew had severe functional impairments possibly related to a PG fetal alcohol type syndrome[they are not sure yet]. PG is a double alcohol & as such a fetal double alcohol type syndrome maybe occurring, as I read it. achickenlittleskyisfallingnote: This is only a initial sign in humans mammalian rat relatives, but one I would gladly & easily heed just to be safe if I was a woman or had toddlers.

This it is not a freshly published study. I would be irate that a doofus[mE] told the vape community & not high ups on funded boards. IMO few seek preventive vape related info & only look for positives that drive funding/profits. Maybe the study or my interpretation of it is flawed or mE skyisfalling too strong, but until new science says other wise, I say warning! pregnant vapers beware & all fertile women & caretakers of toddlers educate for future reference. Read & digest what you can from the link & show some one that knows the white coat jargon[such as your doctor].

caution note: to science illiterate thrill seekers: double alcohol does NOT = a double the fun drunk if one drinks PG to get inebriated. Do not do so! large amounts of PG can likely kill adults [thus do not drink pg to get drunk as it is not that type of alcohol.]

It seems this science/study was done by psychiatric neuroscientists @ a [private research] university [ top four in funding from the National Institutes of Health] Washington University in St. Louis. I see no cancellation nor update in the .gov sidebar to cancel this studies findings[I assume that is where an update would be.]. No one is going to warn you but mE @ this point or cry foul very hard[Rarely does anyone say stop, until suffering starts. I thank these scientists for their possibly needed preventive findings.].

Here is another info link that is relevant. [a second revision from one of the the researchers apparently.]

Neurodevelopmental Apoptosis
" The period of vulnerability coincides with synaptogenesis, also known as the brain growth spurt period, which occurs postnatally in rodents (first 2 weeks after birth) and both prenatally and postnatally in humans (third trimester and several years after birth). "
breakdown as I read it = they apparently have now found PEG [polyethylene glycol] does not cause the syndrome like condition. PEG is not a double alcohol & this makes mE warning more solid & IMO that is why the researcher stressed it in this follow up. This is sound science the GOV & all should be sprinting with IMO. I clearly read the writers distress & concern in this revision, as was also clear to mE in the original posting of their datas findings.

Aka children under three should not go near fog machines of any PG sort IMO as well.

tl;dr Double alcohol/PG = may cause a possible fetal double alcohol syndrome [in rats] as I read the known science. IMO keep PG fog away from toddlers & those expecting little ones. [just in case the science pans out to be fully solid].

This is bad & will impact more than vape, if it pans out. Fog machines of many types are used around toddlers & expectant mothers too. I doubt any people in charge of the masses will act or care until monkeys get ill or illness is documented in humans & forced. I would want to not play roulette with a precious child & PG. IMO They can wait until older for PG fun :)

I doubt this is already old told news to the women of vape & maybe I or the researchers are mistaken somehow, but I feel confident that as it sits now a warning needs to be issued & no one has likely mentioned this PG info places it should maybe be posted. Possibly the FDA needs to ponder the issue a warning label requirements on PG stuffs. I doubt they would act, but it would show care from the vape community if done smoothly even if it does not pan out [note: I am often an alarMIST type, someone else decide if that is needed for now. I am sure some in the medical community have some knowledge possibly, but I doubt the FDA gov employees have applied this info to vapers & people exposed to fog machines, as the study was done with pediatric intraveinious medicine in mind & not the general public safety they are slow to act on.] I say this because many smoker women when they hear they are pregnant might think the ecig is safer to wean off analogs & if the info is hidden away that creates a situation of non informing those @ risk of a known health risk potential [that is illness in and of itself & a cover up could be infered. I say sprint with it & be the lighthouse, as the researchers are likely legally bound to not sound any early alarms outside of their data reports. Fog machines are common & fun for kids. I know smoking causes fetal damage but this PG study shows signs of extreme syndrome-like conditions that likely exceeds smoker related preganancy complications IMO. [No one knows the levels needed or if it is solid science yet. {thus IMO No analog nor vape nor fog fun for those @ possible risk.}]

Someone other than mE [a shy/hermit/recluse/runtEnut] needs to decide what to do & take the ball I now pass, see if it is sound enough for an alarm, then roll with it as needed. It is a major alarm call in mE book & I will see as a real likely true risk that others control upon those whom can not choose yet, as until science says other wise, it makes logical sense to mE comprehension of chemistry & physiology of what this scenario seems to be mimicking.

As with silica I do not care how much exposure!, I want harm reduction education more than being an unknowing guinea pig or seeing if kids one day have brain damage from PG, due to pro vape is all water type BS science some have poisoned minds with to dumb them down for profit. I leave these words to document I did what I could by way of care based education if this science proves what it indicates [in essence: I warned].

Vape educated, vape safely, & Vape to enjoy life long lasting.

I am by no means a doctor at all. I skimmed through the linked article at the top of the post. From what I read, I do not interpret fog machines and second hand vape to be dangerous to pregnant women or children ages 3 and under. The article specifically addresses phenobarbitol directly injected into an infant with PG as the carrier fluid for the drug phenobarb. At 2mL of PG per kg of the patient, and assuming most infants to kids up to age 3 weigh somewhere between 8lbs and 30lbs (2kg-13kg), the dose of PG that kids would get would be somewhere between 4mL -26mL of PG per phenobarb IV dose. That is a LOT of PG! I vape somewhere between 2-3mL of eliquid per day. I DIY my own liquid. 30mL batch has roughly 18mL of PG in it. I am vaping somewhere between 1.2-1.8mL of PG per day. Substantially lower than the above mentioned doses that are being directly injected into an infant. So assuming a pregnant state, how much of that 1.2-1.8mL would cross the placenta barrier? The PG is not being directly ingested, it is being heated, atomized, and inhaled. Furthermore, how much of that PG is exhaled from my vapor? Given the atomization of PG and the clearstream studies performed earlier in 2012, the exhaled vapor contains trace amounts of PG. Given trace amounts are exhaled, how much could reasonably be re-inhaled by a pregnant woman or a small child under the age of 3?

As I stated above, I am not a doctor or scientist, but I do have a medical background as a critical care RN. And I would in no way tell a pregnant woman to vape as I believe more studies are needed and choosing to vape or not while pregnant is a personal decision, much like the choice to smoke or not is. However, I would be very cautious about lumping vaping and second hand vape as well as fog machines into the same category as the above mentioned research. Direct injection of PG into an infant/toddler is very different from second hand inhalation or crossing of the placenta barrier. And in regards to vaping, there is always VG if someone is pregnant or has small children and they are truly worried about the risk of PG.
