Probably a stupid coil question

My Valkyrie clone should be getting here Saturday and I have a question: how do you build a normal coil? Since I can't check the ohms until I can get a multimeter, I don't want to risk going too low. I did get Sony VTC5s though so I should be good.
I wrote out a long post and then my internet disconnected so I'm going over the pointers real quick:
Should I get twenty eight or thirty gauge Kanthal? Which is more variable?
Would a q-tip be too thick for regular, not micro or macro or anything else, coils?
I'm using hemp as a wick because I have tons of it--I know it carries over its own flavor at first, would it be possible to vape unflavored VG to help lessen that while saving my juice?

both 28 and 30 gauge would be reasonable for building a "normal" coil. Perhaps start with 8-10 wraps on your q-tip shaft. 8 wraps of 28g will net you a little over 1Ω. 10 wraps of 30g . . . . . IDK, maybe 1.8Ω? Anyway, you're not pushing the limits of the battery by any means. This "valkyrie" is a mech.? You should probably get the 28g wire then, for the variability you desire. Q-tip looks to be about 3/32", so bigger than micro and smaller than macro. Definitely use whatever you have "tons of" for wick. What better way to choose? (take the tip off the q-tip and try that. cotton is good wicking)

Thanks! I'll go with the 28g then. Yeah, the Valkyrie is a hybrid mech mod. If I discover I hate the hemp, I'll definitely go with cotton. If the hemp is bearable I'll stick with it because I've seriously got a ridiculous amount. I've got like six rolls of two hundred and fifty feet, I think? Something crazy.

You should really get a multimeter or ohm meter to check resistance. There are a lot of youtube videos that can teach you how and what to build to your preference.
I'm gonna get a multimeter my next pay check. This one went to the Valkyrie itself and rent, haha. An ohm meter won't help because I can't take the atomizer off the Valkyrie. I've watched tons of videos but haven't really found any for just...a regular build. Most of the videos are either dual coil or sub ohm or etc etc.

If you have a tape to measure what your wrapping on, this will help>>Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators
Thank you so much, that'll be really helpful.

So I built my first coil using some cotton and the wire the Valkyrie came with. I have no idea what the gauge is, to be honest. I did four/five wraps around a q tip and it's firing just fine. Glowing from the middle out and all, I was actually really surprised. The problem is that it tastes pretty bad. Like it's burning or something? I haven't used this juice much, so I'm not sure if that's just what it tastes like, but I wanted to get some opinions before I rewick it, if possible. I'm pretty sure the cotton isn't burning, it's pretty thoroughly soaked.

do get yerself on ohmmeter or a multimeter (pro'ly the latter, as it's a hybrid). . .. . . . . . Really.

Most likely you've got a section of coil not getting enough juice. A "hotspot" or a "hotleg". Take off the cap and watch it while you fire. . .. hold it for at least as long as when you vape it. Watch for a section of the coil that's starting to glow (which it never should when you're wicked and juiced).

I've got a multimeter and some Kanthal in the mail, actually. I'm very bad at budgeting. >.>
The weird taste went away after a while, I think maybe it was just new coil taste? Is that a thing? Everything's good now, except the vapor is much cooler than I thought it'd be. Which is honestly a little disappointing. I'll try some different builds next week when all my stuff gets in. Super excited to experiment with it.
