Protank 2 - No More Dry Hits

I've always had issues with my Protank 2 and thicker juices. I'd constantly get dry hits so I came up with a way to stop it. I'm using the airflow control base but this will work the same with the stock base. Click on the pictures for a larger view.

We have the base with the coil head in it.



Pop off the stem. I always find it easier to pop it off while it's attached to the base. Unscrew the coil head slightly before you pop off the stem so it's easier to unscrew the head.



Insert your cotton into the coil leaving a fair amount sticking out from the sides.



Take one end of the cotton and wrap it around to the other side and cut it off right where it meets the cotton on the other side. Then repeat for the other side.



Now we have our cotton trimmed to the correct length.

Screw the head back into the base.



Wrap the cotton around to the other side and tuck it into the channel surrounding the coil head.



Do the same for the other side.



juice up your cotton.



Pop the stem back on the coil head. Fill your tank, screw the base on and vape away! No more dry hits!


I flip the rubber piece on the stem upside down so it doesn't block any juice flow to the cotton.

I flip that rubber piece on the stem for all my protank builds. I did find that cap does hinder juiceflow to the coil. I vape all kinds of pg/vg ratios and have not had a issue with a drier hits since.

I flip it on all mine as well. Protank, mini protank and evods. I always had problems with dry hits in my protank with 100% vg juice which is understandable with such thick juice in a tank but ever since I've been using this method I haven't had an issue.

Did you use Kantal A1? what is the awg and howmany wraps and in what diameter?

If the cotton wick is thick enough and/or a flavor wick is added, there is really no need to use the rubber piece at all...just remove it - especially if you're vaping thicker juice. I vape maxVG always, and often build my coils using 30-guage Kanthal with 10 wraps on a slightly-thicker-than 1/16 drill bit which gives me approx 2.2ohm...a slightly cooler vape is my preference. I also use organic Japanese cotton exclusively for wicking.

This is really helpful info . I'm upgrading to a protank soon. I'm used to working with kanger evods but I think that this will work better for me in the long run and seems to be pretty cost effective.

I have a bunch of heads for my PT3 mini that use the dual coils that I rebuild as single coils. Slightly different heads than the PT2 ones but the principle is the same.

I use three small containers @ .5 cup each. One has a green sticker on top, one is yellow, one red. The green one has heads with good coils and fresh wicks. When I want a fresh head, I just grab one, then drop the used one in the yellow ctnr to be reworked and/or cleaned at a later time. When the coil finally gives up the ghost, it goes into the red one to be rebuilt.

When I feel like it, I redo them as a batch so I don't have to get my stuff out so often.

Economy of effort. Saves me lots of time and money ;-)

I remove mine completely as well...rewicked with organic cotton...not one issue since I started doing this. Works on my protank 2's; protank mini 2's and also I have recently added a couple of Anyvape Davides...both the 3.0 and the mini...all no grommet. Just mho but I really like the Davide tanks...a little harder to fill at first (the fill holes are small) but I am noticing the Protanks are starting to gather dust...lol...vape on!

How's one to go about popping the stem off, what is the best way?

Niteowl, I typically rock the stem in the same direction of the wick. I don't like using pliers for fear of crimping or bending the chimney. Some are a bit tighter than others, but after a few wiggles, the stem pops right off.

I tried the tip about turning that rubber gasket that sits on the top upside down and that made a big difference. As well as adding a thin layer of cotton over the wick (as a flavour wick).

One additional tip that helps with flooding and dry hits.
Use The AFC to increase air flow in case of flooding
Use The AFC to decrease air flow in case of dry hits

I have begun to prefer rayon ( cellucotton) over Japanese cotton but whatever.

I see from the two I did today ( nice job bty) that I will be needing more wick ...
I used Japanese cotton this time but maybe I will try the rayon in a thicker slice like your pics..
shes gurgling now but much nicer vape for shure...

that's why there's already extended larger tanks for it on the market ..
So I see this is why they made the kayFun v4 type of rebuildable tank atomizers hmmm

Hi, really work well for me too.
Though I just remove rubber and steem. That take some twizers and remove old wick, than just add cotton on top of the old coil & than put it back together.
Add juice & than let it sit and soak for ten minutes.
Vapes great, better than it did for when it was new.

On your next juice order get yourself some 1 and or 2mm silica. I didn't like to use cotton as a flavor wick since it burns super easy. You can also take tweezers, a propane torch and dryburn those stock little flavor wicks but they will fall apart sooner or later.
I did try rayon in my protank builds with not so good results. The rayon would vape nicely for the first tank or so then after that I had to pull like heck to get a decent vape. I dunno why that happened but it did the same thing with different heads, different protanks and varied coils so I reverted back to hemp in my PT builds and back to normal. Don't get me wrong about the rayon. Rayon in a kayfun is great but in a protank its not so great.
