Not really sounds like you got a good coil to run on the MVP. Nothing wrong with the silica wicking to start with, nor a basic standard 5/4 coil wrap, just make sure the positive and negative legs have all the slack pulled out of them to prevent shorts and hot legs. Just takes practice and practice and soon you'll be able to do rebuilds with a blind fold on.

Gratz on your first rebuild.

new to rebuilds...wound a 30 gauge kanthal 4/5 coil on two 2mm silica wicks. first reading 1.3 ohms on my MVP 2, then 1.5 ohms. anything i should be aware of [other than i could be using better materials]? thanks

You want it to read 2.0-2.5 for most mods, ego's etc.
That way it will perform better if your switching around.

I would suggest you use 32 kanthal wire and wrap 5-6 times.
I don't know how big your wraps are but try some at 5, check it and see where to go from there.
Also, cotton to me makes a better wick.
You can buy 100% cotton yarn. It's cheap and you can find it at places like Michaels craft shops.
I also use size 40 machine screw to make my coils, (five wraps), and it comes out 2.02 every time.
Makes the cutest perfect little coil you ever saw.

Later, when you thread the wick through it, use a beading needle, (again a craft store)
It makes it real simple. This should help give you some ideas.
The technique is basically the same for any head.

Machine screw coil wrap for Vivi Nova / Kanger T3 - YouTube

Hang on to the 30 wire, as it is among the sizes used to wick, but will take more wraps.
You'll find a use for it later on.
After I unscrew my new coil from the screw, I insert a wire or toothpick through it, as I set it in the slots.
Try not to distort the coil, that makes it easier to work with.
Once you've tested it, thread your wick, and your done.

You'll get lots of suggestion, this is just one, but it works real slick for me.

I remember starting out using a 4/40 machine screw, makes such perfect even wraps ^_^. Still OP, 30ga is still good to use in a Kanger BCC head, just takes more wraps, but it is more resilient than 32ga. 1.5 on an MVP like I stated above is fine, 2600mah battery you got the juice for a Low Res coil, so stick with it

I use a 1/16" drill bit, 30 ga Kanthal wire at 10wraps and end up at 2.0 ohms +/- and each wrap up or down in relative terms is 0.2 ohm. I as well use 100% cotton yarn purchased from Michael's craft store, Sugar & Cream. I only use 3 of the 4 total strands right now inside the coil and take the 4th and cut it down for 'flavor wicks'.

To start, I torch the Kanthal to take out the springiness. After the wrap, I hold it with needle nose pliers, make sure all coils are touching and torch it again so it'll hold shape. After the first couple, it gets pretty easy.

Thanks for this thread! I'm waiting for my cotton yarn to dry now (boiled it first), but I have some 32 gauge kanthal just begging to be coiled. So, am I correct in assuming that the more wraps I do, the higher the resistance? I'd like to be at 2.2-2.5.

I do 5 wraps and get 2.2 to 2.3
Try that, and then you can always try 6 or more, if you want.
When I do 6, I get to close to 3. and that's not where I want to be.
Some wrap around the wick with a needle or toothpick inside, then pull it out, and it makes a difference in the size of the coil.
So, since I don't know how you wrap, try 5 wraps and go up one more at a time from there.

Thanks! So, does it make a difference in the size of coil, as well? In essence, the more wire used, the higher resistance you'll see?

Exactly right, all wires have a "resistivity" or natural resistance to electricity. So the more wire used the more resistance the coil creates. My :2c: try a micro coil with twisted cotton, based on my research its one of the best setups to use on a Kanger head.

I may forge into that world eventually - just want to get the general process mastered first. ;)
