Protanks :)

So, I've been using butcher's string and it tastes great, but seems to burn out too quickly, so I grabbed some silica BUT... I picked up 3mm and the wick and the flavor wicks... it's just too much and mutes the flavor too much. I use 32g kanthal (sometimes 36 if I want high ohms, but that's rare).

So... what size silica are you guys using? I can take the 3mm apart, but I'm wondering what size I should be shooting for here. Help?

Edit: Yeah, I can't spell silica apparently.

I posted here about a fix for one of the commonly-encountered issues with Protanks:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/clearomizers/433619-kanger-protank-flooding-possible-fix.html

I used 3mm Ekowool, which I believe equates to something between 3mm and 4mm silica wick. But 2mm should work. The thing about using a wick that is too narrow is you might eventually get flooding as the tank empties out.

Every Protank experience seems to be a little different, depending on ohms/volts vaped and liquids used.

If your cotton wicks are burning out too quickly, you're most likely wrapping them too tight.

Mine will go about 10 days before they get too gunked up (been vaping carmel based brews lately), but they never burn out. Been in the habit of replacing them about every week, usually vaping 3-4 ml daily.

Try wrapping on a 4-40 screw, then inserting the cotton wick instead of wrapping on the wick directly.

I tried recoiling this thing a bunch of times and I could never get it to push higher volts with bigger coils. I tried cotton, silica and even mesh a few times. They either flooded to much or gave dry hits, some with just a dry pull would flood constantly.

I recently got some 2mm hollow eko wool in and one strand in and it's not bad. I did a 6 wrap of 34 awg nichrome and it ohmed at 2.4 or 2.5. It seemed to work pretty well with no dry hits or flooding. I gave it to my friend to use and he's enjoying it. Me and my friend also use 50/50 mount baker vaper liquid.

You can get away with 3mm wick with no flavor wicks or just 1 flavor wick that you unravel and lay flat. You'll get an increase in flavor and vapor production but i find that it will flood every once in a while depending on how you build your coil. Protank rebuild is the guide i used. Like i said it flooded for me every once in a while so i took 1.5mm hemp wick that is 3 strands and unravel them and lay them flat as flavor wicks and the flooding stopped. 4/5 wraps of 32g kanthal so i can use it on my k100 finally got my protank where I wanted it.

I swapped out the top wick in my Protank head with 2 pieces of Peaches & Creme white cotton yarn from Wal-Mart and haven't had a single flood issue, no gurgle and no burning. So far am 24 hours straight into my rewicking and the thing is performing amazingly well, better than a brand new silica wicked head.

At $3 or less for a 109m roll of yarn the price is fantastic as well, and rewicking only takes 10 seconds or so, just using it cut straight from the ball of yarn. Very impressed with it!
