ProVari Internal Ring?

I purchased a used ProVari 2.5. When I opened the tube this plastic piece fell out that I guess makes a contact between the battery and the board. Is this how they originally came?

All I can tell you is I have 8 - 2.5 provari's, I have never seen anything like that before.
