I am new to vaping and I have a question about the quality and origin of the parts. As I understand it a lot of the stuff comes from some back room in China and is ripping off some other builder.

For example the hammer was designed and built by someone and sold for hundreds of dollars. The guys in China got one and copied it and sell it for $40. The fit and finish on the Chinese ones can vary greatly. Buyer beware.

I have a Cool Fire 1, that came with an iClear30B, and an iClear30B I bought alone. Both of them had the innokin sticker with the scratch off code that the web site said was genuine. The iClears are different. On one the lines appear to just be painted on and on the other they are machined, using my fingernail I can feel that they are down a little and it feels like there are tiny rings. The other has, I think, a black plastic part on the top while the other is just plain steel.

Is it just minor revisions by the manufacturer during the life of a product, sourcing from 2 different vendors, one or both a fake, something else?

The Chinese do business much different than the rest of the world. There are very few patents applied for, and even if there are they are not enforced. A select few major manufacturers make innovative designs, and a multitude of knockoff manufacturers make clones and generic copies.

For the Chinese, its quantity over quality. I'm not sure that "quality control" is a high priority for most manufacturers. Their motto seems to be, "build it cheap so that they can buy it cheap. If it doesn't work or breaks, they'll buy another." And because we do just that, there's no reason for them to change.

There's not much choice for us vaping customers. China probably make 95% of our vaping gear due to their cheap labor and manufacturing costs government subsidies, etc. The more developed nations can't compete due to higher wages, higher costs for parts and materials, labor laws, regulations, etc. China has a monopoly in the e-cig market.

Would you pay significantly more for higher quality gear if it was made elsewhere? Most people probably will say yes, but in reality actually would not.

Just my :2c:
