So I have a Kayfun lite that I have been loving since I got it a few weeks ago. So I have a few questions for the Kayfun masters.

1 - Say you need to change a coil or a wick with a pretty much full tank.......how does one do this without pretty much wasting all of that juice?

2 - I was thinking of just banging out a bunch of coils one night when watching TV.....wrap and mount them, torch and compress, insert the wick and then remove, that way they are ready for when I need them. Anyone else do this?

Thanks guys!

I'm no master, but here are my answers:

1. I usually wait until a tank is empty to mess with the coil, but sometimes it's not possible. If there is a significant amount of juice left, I take the drip tip off and turn the tank upside down over a bottle or vial. Then I unscrew the base and let the liquid drain into the bottle.

2. I've never prebuilt coils not on the base, but I do sometimes build a coil on my spare Kayfun so I can just quickly change the bases out if I have an unexpected coil failure. I don't see any problem with making a bunch of coils in advance and storing them though. For me, most of the time building a coil is spent aligning and getting the ends under the screws, and compressing after getting it on, so having a coil ready made would only save a small amount of time and energy.

ETA: oh I went back and re-read. You were going to mount them and compress them before storing. My only concern would be whether you will leave tails on, and if not, how hard will it be to remount them?

If I need to empty my tank for whatever reason(s), I use a syringe and draw the extra liquid from the bottom fill port.

For my KFLs, I always have some 6 coils on hand ready for a quick change. However, I do not pre-wick the said coils. I always wick after the coil has been mounted on the deck, set in the proper position and tested on an ohm reader.

Ahhhh I see.....ok I think I am on the right track, as I have tried all 3 of the methods mentioned in the reply messages. The method that seems to work the best for me is to turn upside down and loosen the bottom cap......and just let the juice drain into a bottle. Thanks guys!

Whenever I get the time to make a few spare coils I'll post some results..........I have to see about how much of the tails to leave on as mentioned in the replies.

A coil will last you a month to months before you have to replace it, so the 3 minutes it takes to wind one isn't exactly time saving to me. Wicking is what you do most often. Like everyone else, I unscrew the top cap and pour the juice back into a bottle with the tip snapped out, then I replace the tip in the bottle.

To change a wick, I remove the top cap, drain the juice, remove the poly tank (or whatever configuration you use), remove the chimney, pull the wick, wash off the coil, and dry burn. I insert a new wick and replace the parts in reverse order. I always fill through the bottom port, although it's convenient to fill from the top if you are changing the wick. Hold a finger on the air hole, fill through the top, and invert the Kayfun once you put the top cap back in place to let the juice drain out of the air ducts and then vape. Top cap filling is going to put a little juice into the collector cap (Russian or Kayfun 3.1) and/or the air ducts. You may have to invert it and blow out the juice from the ducts. Tilt it enough to prevent blowing juice out of the tank itself.

It all sounds complicated, but it's second nature after you do it once or twice.

1 - Use a syringe or pour it back in the bottle, I'd use another bottle so I didn't contaminate new juice with used but that's just me. I've only had to change a coil before the tank ran dry once and that happened with a dark coffee juice. After that I've just used cleaner burning juices in my Kayfun and used the darker and/or sweeter ones that gunk faster with my bottom feeder or drippers. If I did want to use faster gunking juices in my Kayfun I'd get enough Kayfuns to last a week then build them all at once as I only do maintenance once a week.

2 - I cut my cotton in advance and store the strips in a small box, saves time when it comes to building. Coils, you might try wrapping to get the diameter but they last so long I don't really see it being useful. I've never replaced a coil because it needed it, always been to try something new. I definitely wouldn't mount, compress and remove it as it's probably going to get messed up when mounting again so you'll most likely need to compress and tweak it a second time and definitely don't cut the legs early, you'll probably need those again to remount it.

Thanks for the replies everyone.....I'm asking because I am going to Europe for 2 weeks at the end of October.

Of course there will be a fresh coil inserted the night before we leave.......but I was going to bring a few spares in case I needed to swap it out while abroad.

Just thinking ahead to be safe, I dont want to have to buy a pack of smokes when away because my vaper crapped out.

I seriously need to just order 3 or 4 more Kayfuns and be done with it haha.

Probably flogging the proverbial dead horse but, have you tried carrying a couple (or a few) prewrapped coils on a tootpick?

I have Kayfuns running coils I installed new over 4 months ago. Still working great. Re wick every 3-10 tanks depending on e-liquid used.
For a Trip a couple of pre-wrapped coils is a good idea.
Coils
Cotton Ball
Screwdriver
Tweezers
Nail Clippers
E-liquid
CHARGER/Adaptor
All together in a go bag. :)

I probably have a 100 used coils that at one time or another have been on all 4 of my kayfuns. these were working coils and are of varying resistances, gauge and diameters. also some are round, some are twisted, some are parallel. these older coils go into a storage and a lot of the time I go through them and reinstall. as long as your careful taking out the old coils (like totally unscrewing posts) then they easily snap onto the posts when reinstalling(and this time you can leave the screws on). granted I don't use anything thinner then 28g, while most are 26 and 27 but I suppose if you were using thinner gauges, this might not be as easy because now upon reinstallation these thinner coils may get tweaked. with thicker gauge coils that were properly set tight the first time, they simply snap back in place without moving at all. so yes, if you did want to premake these coils, and they were thicker gauges, you can set them and reinstall. another note is that when I install a coil in my kayfuns, I will wrap the leads around the posts as far as possible before clipping off, I would say I go around 3/4 around posts this way they can snap back on later.

I pretty much use a syringe to empty it before fiddling with the coils.

I have full extra bases for both my KFL and the mini, since I have 4, I make all the coils, test them, and put the spares away ready to go. In that case all you need to do is slap a tank and off you go. Spare bases are always a plus to have in case you lose a screw or something, you have another one ready to go.

ONLY EVERY NOW AND AGAIN a screw might be a little loose (it fluctuates) with a medium to low tank: plug the airhole and open from top as if you were filling, remove top chimney carefully and top portion of tank. Sometimes you can tighten your screws and center your coil succesfully.

I do this all the time. I use a syringe, put the juice back in the bottle, and carry on.

When I go out I carry a two cell plastic battery box with a charged battery and a cartomizer that I've pre-filled and capped. If for some reason my Kayfun coil dies, I can still vape until I get back home. It's just insurance against not having a way to vape while out. A 3ml sample bottle of juice (for topping off the carto) will usually get you through the day if needed.

I never want to have to choose between buying smokes or continuing to vape. If given the choice I'd just suck it up until I returned home. Nothing will make me light up tobacco again.
