I didn't feel like reading through 10+ pages of sarcastic remarks so I apologize if someone has already said something similar, but I can see where the OP is coming from.
People mistakenly lump all vapers into one group- people that just want something to help them stop smoking. The reality is that vaping is many things to many people. Some people literally just want to stop ciggs, and use vaping to help them, eventually getting off vaping all together. Others want to stop smoking, but don't have a problem being a nic addict, so they choose to vape for the rest of their lives. Others got into vaping to get off cigs, but it has become a hobby and they get REALLY into it. This is where the "aficionado" aspects come in.
"Whatever keeps you off cigs" is NOT enough for hobby vapers. We area always pushing the limits of what's possible with coil/wick/device/battery setups to get incredible performance. We obsess over minute details that other people can't even notice. If that's not an aficionado i don't know what is.
I think a car comparison is a better fit than the wine comparison. There are millions of people who happily drive around in whatever rust bucket they can afford just to get from point A to B. To them, a car is simply a transportation tool. Just like vaping can simply be a smoking cessation aid to some.
Others may tune their cars, throw on a catback exhaust, put some accessories on it, etc. They would be the vapers who are into vaping and want to have some more fun with it than simply using it to stop smoking. I think the majority of ECFers fall into this category.
Then you also have people with track cars, high performance devices that take a lot of work, care, and effort to keep running well. A car is NOT just a simple means of transportation, a car is a mechanical work of art. A person this enthused about cars finds something like an intake manifold beautiful, the sound of the motor as music to their ears. "Whatever gets you from point A to B" is NOT enough for these people. Their goal is not to simply get from a to b, it's to improve every aspect.
For people simply trying to quit smoking "whatever gets you off cigs" is quite relevant. For the hardcore vapers out there, it is NOT about what keeps you off cigs. They already have the no-cigs part down. Now they are trying to improve every possible aspect of their vape. Going into a thread about high-end mechs or RBAs and saying "whatever keeps you off cigs" seems a bit ridiculous to me. Because those people aren't trying to figure out how to stay off cigs, they are trying to get and use the best. And when you are after the best "whatever works" is a totally irrelevant statement.
You wouldn't go into a thread about Ferrari owners and say "yea my Ferrari is good, it gets me to the supermarket and back quite well" That's not the point of a Ferrari, just like getting off cigs isn't the point for many hardcore vapers. The "getting off cigs" has already been figured out, it's no longer about that, it's about maxing out performance, and in that world the "whatever gets you off cigs" has no place.
