I've wanted to try a twisted coil but don't have a drill or anything make it twisted  and I usually get my kanthal from my local vape shop but I'm probably gonna get a big roll of A1 30gauge here soon, I like supporting the shop but 100ft for under $10 will probably last me several years.

A drill would make it quicker, but it's not necessary. I just clamped down 3 wires in a pair of vice grips, let it hang, and spin it like an upside-down top until it's tight. Here's an older pic of triple twisted 31ga Kanthal of mine without a drill..

Uhg, starting to now notice an off flavor with the rayon for some reason. I tried changing the wick between cotton and rayon and testing with various juices, even having a second opinion, and it seems like the rayon is definitely doing something negative with the flavor. Back to cotton for now.

It's easy to get an off flavor from cotton if you use the wrong amount.... I have no reason to think its the rayon when it reduced in size and now your getting coil drying producing a juice burn and off taste. Like when you dry burn a coil.. This is common in the learning stages.. When you have the right density you don't have that problem.. It's like let me stuff a coil with too much or too little cotton and see how bad it tastes.

It took me many tries over a couple months to be able to use cotton successfully with out terrible Off tastes compared to silica..

Just play with it later you can have that "better" all the time when you get it down.

Graham Beauty CEO - "Cellucotton sales are way up this year, the perm must be making a comeback!"

Sally's Regional Sales Manager - "Order 100 more pallets of the Cellucotton, we can't seem to keep it in stock. Seems the perm really is making a comeback!"

Sally's Cashier to Manager - "Um, the people I see come in here to buy Cellucotton lately are dudes, and most have more hair on their face than their head. They seem to be obsessed with dripping, but not from their scalp. They also carry around these flashlights that look like a you know what..."

That's pretty sweet right there, specially for without a drill.

No kidding. Nice looking job! For those of us who own drills that won't grip anything that small (none of mine will): some drip tips have a small silicone sleeve inside them. If you loosely chuck that in the drill, slide the Kanthal into the sleeve & then tighten the chuck, you have an improvised (and free!) pin vise. Works like a hot d**n.

I use an allen key instead of a drill bit, and then hook the wire over the allen key. Grab the other end with pliers and then let 'er rip.. Slowly!!

+1. That's how I do. It changes if I'm doing triple twisted or mundy's magic coil, but those occasions are few and far between. About to try something really crazy with the double helix coil.... twisted 24 ga wrapped twice in the grooves with 28 gauge. Don't even know that I'll be able to wrap a coil with so much wire, but I'm certainly going to try!

What you notice may be just the smoothness of the fibers as their basically nano fibers... Or it could be the nontoxic lubricants used in processing fibers into bales. Namely natural fatty acids that are completely safe.

When it soaks in water it expands greatly to about double its size in width. Slowly bringing it to boil would do it.

You can tell if you have the correct density on the first hit.

I dont mind soaking in water but the boiling part scares me

Really I don't think it matters.. it's the density in the coil that matters most. And secondly the density left in the area or channel that you feed juice from.

Ok it's too tight it works ok but the flavors aren't as good and the coil will gunk. Too tight also adds kind of a dry harshness to the vape even though the rayon wicks enough not to burn

This is exactly what I experienced.

You can order a 40ft box off amazon for 13.00 shipped. Or 500ft box for 12.00 at Sally's. You can order rayon balls for 200 for 12 at delasco consumer catalog. Also springvalley melatonin 1 mg bottle for 4.00 at walmart. The bottle rayon can be rinsed and dryed if your concerned with pill filler dust. The pill is 99% safe filler less than 1% melatonin contained in the pill.

Thought I would add Sally's Website Link. It shows the two boxes to choose from. Would be best to just get #44043 since it's only a few dollars more for twice as much. Click on the Store Locator once the website loads to find the store nearest you. Call them to check if they have it. If they do, just go by and pick it up. Or just place your order.

Got my $1.99 "free shipping" sample from AnasaVapes.

There was $1.13 postage due. No wonder shipping is free! They don't put any postage on it in the first place!

So, they meant that shipping was free for them.. That's bloody brilliant!! I'm gonna have to remember that one.

FWIW: Whatever resistance I'm shooting for I'll adjust the gauge so that I get the desired ohms around 8 wraps. Works extremely well for me.

More wraps almost always results in too much coil mass i.e. annoyingly long ramp up/down times. Less wraps doesn't give enough surface area, which then leads to subpar flavor & vapor and a wick much more prone to burn due to all the heat being concentrated on such a small area.

Mind you I always build microcoils.
I'm like you but instead of the 7 wraps as reference I use length of coil. I always shoot for a 3.2mm coil which is 10 wraps 28 ga. From there if you want to make 27 gauge or less you will start removing wraps.

This is one part of the story. the other part which I don't see people mention is that going lower gauge requires more power to heat up faster. Therefore although you are reducing resistance for same number of wraps, you are lowering attack speed by using more mass. For example: sometimes you will get better performance by staying at 28 gauge and mechanical wrapped 10 times (lets say 1.2 ohms at 4 v) than 27 gauge at wrapped 10 times (let's say 0.9 ohms at 4v). Although you have more power the mass is greater.

That is why I shoot for length of coil. If I make it 3.2mm for the 27 gauge I'll end up with maybe 7 wraps and then I eliminate the horizontal different in mass but maintain the vertical mass which is responsible of the increase in flavor plus a higher wattage at the coil.

Guys can someone tell me how you are inserting the rayon in something like the origen vertical coils for example? As if density is not hard enough to get, I have to get it perfect while jumping hoops by trying to stuff it inside a vertical coil (same goes for gennies). How can I keep the fibers straight and get enough lower tail?

I twist a longer piece of rayon, and really twist the end thats going to be feed though the coil (snip that little excess that prevents it from going through) and just start feeding it through the coil. When the tip of it goes through, I use a really fine tip pair if tweezers to pull down the rest of it. When I have enough in the well, snip it off slightly above the coil. If you need some sort of pic let me know. Works like a charm in the origen!
