Any one here into the RC Planes Hobby?

And people on this board think that they spend a lot of $$$$ on e-cigs. That hobby can really kill your credit rating...lol

It is a lot of fun. I started with electric boats, then gas boats, then elec planes, then gliders, then 1/12 RC cars, Then 1/10 trucks, and now only helicopters.

When I brought my first e-cig home my wife asked" what remote control does that thing use....lol

Yeah, the RC Hobby can get expensive quick... especially if you venture unto the hobby blind and get you first RC Plane with out any simulator experience. That can be a very expensive hobby. On the other hand, there is a way to get in the hobby without spending too much money to start. One of the most expensive investments you will do to start is getting your first Radio. After the initial investment for a radio, it can be very cheap to get your first plane up and flying.

Throwing caution to the wind and flying could never be soo much fun. Forgetting about how to get the RC plane down without destroying it on landing is no laughing matter, but considering you made your RC plane from scratch is what will be rewarding and will teach you how to repair and get that baby up and flying in no time. Repairing your newly constructed RC plane will be the cheapest thing you ever done. Cost to repair could be as much as 2... TWO dollars worth of foam. I have crashed and ripped, crushed or destroyed the front fuse of a foam home built plane and in 10 minutes be up and flying again.

I went about getting in the hobby the easiest and cheapest way..

1) There are plenty of FREE .pdf RC Planes plans
2) Electronic Combos can be had for as little as 30 bucks
3) Spare/Extra batteries are very cheap some going as low as 12 bucks, for a 3S 1800mAh 30C
4)Radios.. most expensive.. This depends on what you want to be able to do.. a good 6 Ch. radio can be had for 120 more or less..

Now, for the free plans..

Here is a sample of what can be done with little effort and money..

I have been in the hobby for a mere 10 months or so. it can grow quick on you and your significant one might not approve of the expense, but.. I always counter with.. Well how about them shoes and purses you seem to buy almost on a weekly basis? She don't like that!!

I really am a beginner at this hobby, but I'm quickly learning the ropes and I already have a system going to build them quick and so too the repairing. Once you get the rhythm going, it's so freaking easy. I like to fly my RC Planes in my front yard and above my home.. it's fun watching the neighbors get a chuckle with the flight and aerobatics show I put for them 3 or 4 times a week.. :)

What people don't use wood, skin and dope anymore?

My dad used to make r/c planes back in the '50's. Mainly bi-planes. Wires, struts, silk skin not mylar. He made r/c boats too. You could get down to eye-level on the ground and wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and the real thing. Unfortunately for me, it's too expensive of a hobby, at least right now. We used to go over to the GM Tech Center and patrol the pond they had there with our boats. Had a 3' long r/c Yamato and a 2' PT-boat. An r/c sub would be cool if I had a pool!

I've only got 2 photos loaded into Photobucket so far, but I'll show them here. I've been flying since 1978, AMA number 106591, and all fixed wing aircraft. My stable includes the P-51 and Mach 1 ships pictured here, plus a GeeBee, 2 Ugly Stiks, a Big Stik with a Maloney 1HP, and a 1/5 scale Cessna 182.
I served in the HC-7 squadron in the Navy from '64 to '70, and developed a strong dislike for helicopters - even though I was an engine/airframe mechanic. I always felt safer with wings that stood still rather than spinning madly above my head. :D
I hold a recreational pilots license (VFR only) and am qualified on Cessna 152s, 172s and a Waco YMF-3 biplane. (That's me and the missus in the third photo.)

I finally started building my JAS a couple of weekend ago. I have worked on it for a total of about 14 hours. I have sanded, spackled and resanded the wings. I covered my servos... I cleaned the intake area.

Cleaned and lined the intake area. Used paperless foam board and Safefoam CA with light Spackle.. you can't realy tell, but it's very smooth.

I think I worked on the intake modding the longest making sure it was smooth all the way to the fan lip.. I was to give it a Tiger Meet Skin and then do the maiden.. I've prepared it for a very smooth finish. No wing to fuse line joints.. all little mold dimples from under the wings and right side of vertical stabilizer have been sanded off. Hatch at bottom is gone..

Intake lip 1.5in. mold indentations have been covered with Dry-Dex Spackle.. They are gone!! What I came out with is a very modded intake area I have no idea how much it gain or lost in power using all stock motor and fan. I have an 80Amp ESC and a 4S3300mAh 30C

It sounds amazing...It almost makes a whistling sound when you power it up some.. Have only done 3/4 throttle and BOY!!
It wants to pull away bad..

Maiden is set til Aug 12.. need to paint first..

Any one here into the RC Planes Hobby?

I flew for 5 or 6 years in my high school days.. I have a couple RC helicopters now (only fly my stable 'noob' one.. big one scares me). But i've been wanting to get back into it for a long time now. last time i flew was about 6 years ago.. time before that... 10 years ago.... before that.. well you get the picture.

A lot has changed since you last flew then. Electrics are way better now.. they are getting bigger and more efficient. Ducted fans have come a long way and are very cheap to by kits from several different vendors. I started about 1.3 years ago. Went directly to electrics and learned how to fly by myself.. NO Buddy Box!! Downloaded a pirated copy of Real Flight 4.5 RealFlight R/C Flight Simulator - The most realistic recreation of R/C flight ever!™ and bought a Honey Bee CP that came with a cheap Sim. I threw away that sim and used the controller to power Real Flight. When I was comfortable with my landings in the sim... I started building my rc planes from scratch via free .pdf plans over at rcgroups.. Once I learned how to fly without crashing and destroying my planes.. I bought my first kit.. The SAPAC JAS-39 you see above. it's my first store bought rc plane. my first real build!! I know it will fly well as I have enough training and experience to keep it from stalling.. I'm certain it will fly more than 10 times.. lol

I also have the Airfield 57" Mustang that is still in the box, also as a kit.. I don't like the RTF.. They sell those with the cheapest electronic equiptment.. It will most certaily result in a total loss if anyone goes the RTF way... It's also a lot cheaper the ARF or Kit.. I have set up a date of Aug 14 to maiden my plane as I don't want to fly it without it being painted. I'm in communication with Callie-graphics to see about getting some new and different decals so I don't have to repaint it the same. I want to see it with another paint scheme as the original.. Maybe a Tiger Meet scheme!! Now, that would be kool.....

Cheers!!
