Only thing I can think of is it had some residue commercial juice on it that contained alcohol.

I am CDO and clean all of my attys and mods with alcohol when I refill, no issues with paint at all.
The paint coming off of a mod is not uncommon. Many mods suffer from this.
There is thread after thread of people stripping and polishing out a mod because of it.
It a manufacturing issue.

@Susaz, you don't use detergent, is that because it leaves a residue, or you can taste it?

Both can happen if not rinsed well enough or it gets in a crack or crevice.

@Rangertrix, what happens if you put denture tablets in an UC? I feel an experiment coming on ...

Maybe I'm gonna feel stupid here, but my brain is not registering what 'UC' is referring to, lol.

As has been stated many times, you can wrap a new coil quicker than the cleaning ritual.

I am fortunate enough to have a UC tank, so I can just chuck stuff in and do something else in the meantime, so cleaning is quite practical for me.

I take your point about recoiling, the bit I always find fiddly is the re-wicking which takes me a lot longer. If I didn't have a UC, and I was a lot more adept at that, I can see the benefit.
