Rebuilding Atlantis coils: do you have to......

Reuse that outer wicking material that fits down in that slot and covers the wicking holes? Can you do without it? Can it be replaced by something else? Or do you just rinse it real well and reuse?

Obviously it would be easer without but I am guessing you might get some flooding without it.
