I have had my nautilus for about 3 weeks, and I was unhappy about how fast I was burning through the heads. I use a SS tank so I can't see the level of the juice and have a bad habit of letting it go empty. The stock heads have a silica wick, and if they get burned dry it tends to torch them resulting in a funky vape taste.
So after watching Rip trippers video I thought what the heck I should be able to do that (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAmIJIUeEUg)
So I picked up a few feet of 28ga Kanthal, Some organic cotton balls, and a few supplies to make up the build. (torch, tweezers, and wire snippers) and went to work.
Making up the micro coil was easy enough, even though my eyes aren't what they used to be. I wound the Kanthal around a 5/64" drill bit (took me 2 tries, the first run was a mess) and then torched it to set the coil. It wasn't quite as pretty as RipTrippers, but it should suffice. Made up the cotton wick threaded it through and trimmed the excess. Installed it in the head without incident. Tested it with my multimeter and it came out to 1.5 ohms, so I knew there was no short. Squirted some juice down into the head and let it sit in the tank for about 10 mins.
Initially fired it up at 4.2 volts and it was still a little dry tasting, did a few primer puffs and kicked the volts up to 4.5 and WOW! This build outperforms the stock dual coil by a good margin. Flavor is excellent, and vapor production is at least as good, if not better.
For the first go around it took me about 1/2 hour to do the build and be back to vaping, I am sure I will be able to shave a significant amount of time off that in the future. I am very pleased at how well this turned out. I am going to order a 100' spool of Kanthal and with the bag of cotton that I bought, I should be able to make new coil/wicks till the end of time. I paid $18 for the 5 pk of replacement heads that I bought, and as long as the wicking material on the side holds out I should be able to rebuild these many many times. Bringing my overall costs down substantially.
