I was thinking of buying an e-cig for a friend who wants to quit. I figure, if he doesn't like it, I can always keep it.

The thing that makes me think the 401 is the apparent lack of a primer puff. This would probably closely approximate actual smoking. I want something he can pick up and go with, something that requires very little finagling.

Is the 401 a good choice? Also, how's the draw compared to say, an 801? (My current point of reference)

I would say go with a 901. Its very good beginner PV, vapor is very good, its very easy to find parts, and isnt as big as an 801.

You cant go wrong with an 801 either, but sometimes it does look a bit large, and that may put off some people.

I havent tried the 401, but do own the 801 and 901, i have sold more people to vaping since i started using the 901.

The M401 is ok problem is carts are small and a pain to fill lots of delicate work to refill I suggest the Joye510 Manual its hits strong and pound for pound is the best off the shelf PV money can buy... easy to fill carts check the Joye 510 Sub Forum here on this site... You also get 2 complete PV's with every Joye510 kit 2 battery's & 2 atomizers...Joye 510 - e-cigarette-forum.com • The place for electronic cigarette reviews, news and chat

Get the 510. Very nice draw, tons of vapor.

My 1st was the 901, good e-cig and I quit analogs as soon as I got it. I tried the pilot (M401) from PS and was disappointed, draw was too light, lots of vapor, but no throat hit for me. I sold the 2 kits I got and went back to the 901.

Yesterday I received the 510, and am now considering selling my 901, or keep it as a backup. TONS of vapor, and I can feel the throat hit coming....as soon as the atomizer is broken in I feel lower nic juices will suffice.

reading through some of the reviews, it seems that they have a rather abysmal atomizer turnover rate.

Is that true?

I have been using the same atomizer for 2 months out of the box and Im ruff on this thing 5-10 second some 15 second drags and it still puffs like a chiminy... I think most dead atomizers are user error and letting them run dry will kill them so top off refill even drip from time to time and you should have no issues... so in response to your question I would say no... just take care of your equipment!!!

I love the m401 and highly recommend it. So long as proper care is taken, the atomizer's life is good. I am still using my first atomizer and it works like new. Also you can dip the atomizer wick instead of dripping on it.. Dripping is messy and it is easy to flood the atomizer and flooding can get juice into the battery. You have no choice but to drip with a recessed atomizer wick. The 401 has an exposed wick. I don't mess around with the hassle of carts.. I just use the mouthpiece without the inner crap. Just be sure to dip again when the wick is becoming dry so as not to dry smoke (about 15-20 good puffs).

Once you get the hang of it.... upkeep and use of the 401 when dipping is actually very hassle free.. I have done an alcohol soak, rinse and blowout a few times and it seems that is all is needed to keep the atomizer in good working order. I would not trade the m401 for any other hardware. There is also now available a usb passthrough that works for both the m401/2 and the DSE-401.

edit: Also... I have noticed that if you just dip and not use the carts, the draw is WAY easier than with the filled stuffing.. It is a clear shot... much like the draw of a regular ciggie. And with dipping... the wick takes what it needs and no more. So I have not had a shot of juice leak into my mouth since i have started exclusively dipping. No chance for overfill!~ heaven:) Also practically 0% waste of juice!

I have a 401 (among others), and while I know some folks love their 401, I can definitely take it or leave it. In my arsenal of toys, it is my least used model.

Specifically, the cartridge size is very small, and refilling/topping off carts isn't exactly easy. Oh, you don't have to be a brain surgeon, but it's definitely more work than a 901, 801, or 501.

As others have noted, the 901 is generally recommended as an excellent e-cig for those new to vaping. Now, if you really don't want to go with a 901, then my suggestion would be to consider a 501. I have a Dura-C (Janty's 501 model), and I love it. You can get it cheaper as an unbranded 501, but the warranty won't be nearly as good as Janty's.

The only downside to the 501 is your reluctance to start your friend off with a manual battery. While I can understand your concerns, I think that the learning curve with a button on the battery isn't all that great. Plus, it eliminates that pesky "primer puff" issue.

I started my sister off with a 901, and she got used to it fairly quickly. I then gave her a generic penstyle with a USB passthrough battery for while she was at work, and she was very happy. I then gave her a Dura-C when they first came out. She was ...... at me, wondering why I held off giving her "the good stuff" for so long. ;) You'd think she'd be more grateful.:)
