Ethyl maltol is usually purchased as a 10% solution in PG ( or you can make up your own solution by dissolving 10 grams of EM crystals in 100 ml of PG). You would then use 2% by volume of EM stock in your recipe; e.g. If you are making a 10 ml recipe, you would add 0.2 ml of EM stock to get a final concentration of 2%.

I read ethyl maltrol 10% diluted 2%..huh? I'm lost..what does that mean?

What you have going on is Two Proportions. And the reason is Very Few People Use Ethyl Maltol in a Pure Form as a DIY Sweetener.

What they are Suggesting you use is Pure Ethyl Maltol (EM) which has been Diluted with Something, Usually PG or PGA or Both, to a 10% Solution (9 to 1 Ratio)

Then take the Diluted EM and add it to your Flavored e-liquid 2% by Volume.

If you buy EM already Diluted to 10% in a Liquid form, which s Very Common, then you just Add 2% of EM to your Mix. But if you buy Pure EM Crystals, than you should Dilute it in a 9:1 Ratio BEFORE you add it to your Mix to Sweeten it.

---

BTW - The 2% is just a Reference Starting Point. Taste is Subjective. So for Some People, 2% might be Too Much. For Other, 2% Isn't Enough.

But you have to Start Somewhere. And 2% is as Good as Any.

Ethyl maltol is usually purchased as a 10% solution in PG ( or you can make up your own solution by dissolving 10 grams of EM crystals in 100 ml of PG).

10 Grams into 100ml ?

Say for Argument that 100ml of PG = 100 grams

If you Mixed 10 Grams of EM with 100 grams of PG, you would have 110 grams of Total Weight. and 10 Grams of it would be EM.

So the EM Percentage would be 10 grams /110 grams = .0909 => 9.09%

Not a Big Deal. But the Math Doesn't Jive.

And some People get Really Hung up with Trying to Make Everything Perfect to 4 Decimal Places. (Which is Silly in My Mind.)

And It can make the Numbers seem Odd when you Double check things in a e-Liquid DIY Calculator. Which just leads to More Confusion.

10 grams of EM to 90 grams of PG makes everything come out Nice and Tidy.

You are technically right, I stand corrected. Easiest thing to do is buy 10% EM premixed.

I just pointed it out because Many Times people get Frustrated when they First start to do DIY and the Numbers Don't Add Up. The Calculator says One Thing but the Pencil and Paper say another.

And what I have found, is when the Numbers are Way Off, people seem to OK with it. Because they feel Certain that One has to be Clearly Wrong.

But when the Numbers are Very Close, then they Get Frustrated because 1/2 of their Brain as "Screw It, What's the Difference?". Where the Other 1/2 says "Why Can't I make this Work Out?"

Yeah, I know what you mean. It can be really frustrating getting started. I worked in lab for a long time so the calculations are second nature, but I imagine for someone without the background it would be daunting.....
Cheers,

I hear you.

I think the thing that gets DIY Newbies so Hung Up is trying to be Both Accurate and Precise.

What they forget is that just about any New DIY recipe is going to need Tweaking for Taste. So don't get too worried about where you start.

Just keep Detailed Records and Strive for Precision First.
