that is a sweeet burl alice!!! ive never used an 801 before, i know they have a different way they thread. i have a little mod i bought months ago that has a 901 and 801 brass top but ive never used it. is the vapor better than a 510 or 306?
801 ...................... HUGE CLOUDS OF VAPOR!!!!!
801 is a whole different animal. Lots of vapor. Pretty constant learning curve as 801 responds to different percentages of PG/VG differently; much more so than 306, 510, 901. Some of the 801 can have a stiffer draw than typical 510 and some are much airier. The atty in picture is an original IKV Mini, the very first ones that came out, when he also had the midi (I forget what they were actually called.) All of the original IKV Mini, that I got, have a lighter draw than I prefer so I have to increase the VG content of juice for best vape for me. The 801, in my opinion, run cooler than the 510 and 306. For instance, the one in picture is an LR 801 1.8 ohm. It is cooler than any 1.8 ohm 510 or 306 that I've ever used. I can do a 2.0 ohm 801 on 5v where as 2.0 ohm 510 and 306 would be too hot for my juices at 5v. A 3.0 ohm 801 isn't very hot at 6v. A 3.9 ohm 801 is good at 7.2v. Any higher ohm 801, and I have some that go up to 5 ohm, for me need even higher voltage. I tried the 5 ohm once at 7.2v and it was too cool for me.
The original IKV Mini had the bridge so close to the top that it was difficult to find any DT, other than the plastic whistle tip, that came on it, that fit on without touching the bridge. But that is not a problem with any other 801. I did have success with the Super T SS 801 to 510 tube adapter. The very inexpensive atty, in picture, $0.95 from Vaper Kings has a shallow enough base, too, as do the Empire Pyrex. Isaac quickly redesigned the Mini by adding a couple of mm to the tube, and then maybe one more revision, with a little more height, and then phased out the Midi (or what ever it was called). I like the Midi length so I have cut some of the tall/standard down to Midi height. (And them you have to crimp in the tube a bit as the factory made 801 narrow, at the top to fit the 801 DTs.)
Back to vapor/flavor. DH used 801 pen style from August 2010 to Dec. His vapor, me smelling it second hand, was much more aromatic than mine from 510 or 306 that I was using, even if we were using the same juice. It really brought out the sweetness in the FSUSA Cuban he was using at the time.
The 801 is great for dripping, too, but it is probably the most difficult atty to use on a bottom feeder.
As I said, DH used the Pen Style 801 with SR attys for almost five months, with straw modified carts (not carto). He frequently let the cart get too dry but only burnt up one 801 the first week he started vaping.
Tripp is the only other confirmed REO 801 "junky" that I'm sure about. I'll bet he can give more and/or better critique than I. Karen has some 801s, too, and enjoys using them. I like having one 801 and one 510/306 going at the same time. The exact same juice, in each will seem like a very different juice.
One other advantage to getting 801 during opening sales is that they are special order so you don't have to fight the crowds. But if you aren't sure you like them then to have them "sex changed" entails extra cost for Rob's labor and the shipping both ways.
One other advantage, very specific for me, is that when my 801 woods decide to go "swimming", of course only certain woods and well Howard's soaked and waxed inside and out, I just pull out the battery, wipe everything down, blow out the 801, and keep on vaping without skipping much of a beat, and I don't have to leave the spa. The 510 and 306 attys don't "act" as good after they've had a dunk. Note..... If they are submerged for more than a few seconds I would not use the battery until it dried out for a week or so. Mine are only in the water for a few seconds. (I spend hours, at a time, in the spa; temp not higher than 100F for health reasons. With perfectly adjusted water, and using Borax, as a conditioner, your skin doesn't get pruney or dried out.)
So, another Feisty Alice Book.
Hope the Mrs is improving and, if you are suffering discomforting "empty nest" issues, be advised you will adjust and begin to love it.
Hugs, Alice
