I only play by ear. I don't usually know what key I'm playing in. I know it's usually the first or dominate cord, so if some asks I can figure it out. My dad used to sing and play in a band and would keep "the circle of fifths" handy so he would know what cords to expect for a given key.

So, you up for the challenge ? You've already got the first part right for this particular song I have in mind. Merle Haggard's "I'm a lonesome fugitive" You can use the internet all you want.

And as a hint, it's a I, IV, V, type of song.

Edit: circle of fifths is quite handy to look at for I, IV, V. It's all right there. Problem is, what is the I :)

I'm probably not the best one to pick for this. I don't know how to read music or anything. I think the cords are C, F and G7. So I'm guessing that's the key of C. I just play by ear.

Did you look at the chord charts available all over the net that show it in G? It's not. It's in C#. Where on the 1966 video it looks like he's playing a G but it's a C. Now Merle doesn't use a capo. So in the videos he's tuned up a 1/2 step on all strings and therefore the first chord is C#. I don't like to tune my good acoustics up a half step so I just capo on the first fret. Therefore when I'm playing a C shape I'm playing a C#.

This all came up because I'm learning the song and none of the chord charts matched up with what was playing so I had to figure it out. Just wondering what other people's approaches might have been. And Merle makes it look like he's playing in G. But he's not making G, C D chords as would be expected.

Edit: for example, on the 1966 live recording on youtube he makes what looks like a G, but it's more a C/G. Same with the C (it looks like an F) it's a shortened version, as is the D which looks like a G but he's not hitting triads so it can look like a G. For the notes in the chords that he doesn't hit he has the rest of the band to fill in those notes.

Hey, thanks for playing. I'd love to share a beverage with you one day.

Half the time I'll be playing a chord and can't remember what it's called. I just play for me. I only had to know the names of things when my dad wanted me to play with him.

If you please nobody but yourself you're still ahead of the game. There are those that can't even do that.

I bet if you sink back into some Van there might be some relief. I'm about to do so myself :)

Good morning everyone just getting ready to go out and plant all my starters for the garden in the little greenhouse I made yesterday By the time the risk for frost is over I can lift the house off and they can grow giving me an early crop :) Corn and peas to start Maybe I will get some tomatoes started soon too
I did that this year. Summer has been a flop though. And possums got lots of it. Really disappointing season here
