I bet if you sink back into some Van there might be some relief. I'm about to do so myself![]()

Did you look at the chord charts available all over the net that show it in G? It's not. It's in C#. Where on the 1966 video it looks like he's playing a G but it's a C. Now Merle doesn't use a capo. So in the videos he's tuned up a 1/2 step on all strings and therefore the first chord is C#. I don't like to tune my good acoustics up a half step so I just capo on the first fret. Therefore when I'm playing a C shape I'm playing a C#.
This all came up because I'm learning the song and none of the chord charts matched up with what was playing so I had to figure it out. Just wondering what other people's approaches might have been. And Merle makes it look like he's playing in G. But he's not making G, C D chords as would be expected.
Edit: for example, on the 1966 live recording on youtube he makes what looks like a G, but it's more a C/G. Same with the C (it looks like an F) it's a shortened version, as is the D which looks like a G but he's not hitting triads so it can look like a G. For the notes in the chords that he doesn't hit he has the rest of the band to fill in those notes.
Hey, thanks for playing. I'd love to share a beverage with you one day.
A lot of country musicians from Merle's era and even some today play the Cmaj you are describing. This was because the instruments they played, particularly the Fender Telecaster for guitar players, had such a tinty sound to them and the Cmaj chord with the added G bass note made it sound beefier. With all the electronics, (pedals and amplifiers), we have today it is easier to get a beefier sound and less use the Cmaj like back in the day.
As to the C# you are imagining it being written in, I would tend to doubt that. The reason I say this is because of the analog recording process. He probably recorded it in C, but because of the mastering process of recording, the key changes when recording it to tape and then mastering it over to vinyl. A lot of recording engineers would either speed up the recording or slow it down when mastering it and the key would always change a 1/2 key. Just as an example would be songs we know were written and recorded in E. We got frustrated because when we played along with the recording it seemed the recording was either in Eb or F. This was because they either slowed down the master or sped it up. When we were in the studio the engineer always told us to tune up a 1/2 key because he wanted to slow the master down to give the song a better feel. This would because it was hard rock / heavy metal back in the mid/late 80's. There were times when we had to re-record because he couldn't get the exact sound he wanted when he slowed it down. I will say a lot of the scratch tracks felt like they were a thousand miles an hour when we listened back to them. Back in the day of early country those musicians had a tendency to play stuff at a snails pace. This is also part of the reason I just don't care for early country music.
I did that this year. Summer has been a flop though. And possums got lots of it. Really disappointing season here

Maybe Astral, maybe no guru. Not sure. Finishing dinner and then going to put on something that will bring me to ground. Probably Astral because you recommend it so highly and I've not listened to it enough.
Edit: I cant find Astral Weeks. I know I have it....
think youtube![]()
Yeah, an IT person would have thought of that. I've been using it more recently to find stuff I don't have. Think that's where I got it initially but can't find it.
Sooooo, I decided on William Shatner's "Has Been". Some of it is quite funny and he's definitely got some good people backing him on that one. Not for everyone..... But weird people like me might like it.
Edit: "You'll Have Time" is a great one. I live that way, enjoying my time![]()
Interesting. I like the C/G for alternating bass. Now the song, as presented, is in C#. My problem was that even if it wasn't it would probably have been in C. Not the G key that all the chords chart show. Or am I missing something here. The rest of makes sense as far as mastering it goes. I'm no great shakes. But I'll figure stuff out.
As Well, C# is a good key for me to sing in.
Thank you very much for all the info. Makes me that much smarter and learn how much further I have to go. (More time than I'll live)
have you fallen recently? hit your head?![]()
There's a bunch of idiots out there charting and posting songs on the net and half of them don't know chord structure at all. A lot of them are cut/paste from other site's so that is probably why it winds up that way everywhere. I have seen a lot of charts that are transposed and that is probably what you saw in the key of G out there. I also saw it in E A & B also. I play a few songs that I have transposed because I can't usually sing the song in the original key. One of the songs that comes to mind is What's up by 4 Non Blondes. The original is A Bm D and I play it in G Am C. Much better on the throat, not to mention it was a female that wrote and sang it...
You're just now figuring that out?As far as that song, when I go I ain't looking back and saying I wished I'd tried that. I've not done it all, but I've done more than many. And for my experiences, bad and good (as perceived by me), I relish them, even while I might hate them at the same time....
