I get all my wire from Electronicstix.com, 28-32 gauge, never had a problem with it ever being out of stock. It's like 1.50...
Ribbon is a flat piece of metal, regular stuff is round.
As far as vaping goes, the ribbon has more surface area in contact with the wick, considerably more in fact.
