When I first started with nickel, I only had Erlkonigins. I have since recently acquired a Kayfun v4.
I always build the same when using nickel wire. Initially, I was using 30g but have since begun using 28g. I don't do anything special. No hardening, no twisting and no special type coils. Simple 8 spaced wrap around a 3mm mandrel. Also, when I first started I was using rayon but am now using KGD. For me, this ohms out to .12. I vape anywhere between 22-24w @ 420-480F.
I tried micro touching coils at first but found them kind of tough to build with the flimsiness of the nickel. I initially thought it was bad to dry fire them so on my first few builds I didn't. Had hot legs/coils and was getting terrible performance. Since switching to spaced coils, I now dry fire before wicking. I turn TP off and set watts to 10-12. A few pulses and the coil is glowing from the inside out. I never have to fiddle with getting it to fire properly. Haven't used anything else since switching to spaced coils.
With TP you will learn right off the bat if your wicking is set up properly. If it's not wicking correctly/fast enough, the device will go into TP almost as soon as you fire the device or very quickly after you do fire it.
With TP, you have to make sure all connections are very secure or resistance will jump around and/or it will bounce back and forth between F/V. I really crank down on the coil screws and always make sure that my 510 is tight.
I don't own a Rose and I traded my SQr so I can't comment on either of those but concerning the K4, my resistance fluctuates when opening/closing the JC. This is because a spring is being used as part of the conductive path. As long as I have the JC fully open (spring compressed), I haven't had any issues with the K4.
To me, overall, it is a much better vape experience. I love my DNA40s.
