recently i went to EAA air adventure, that's right oshkosh the biggest avaition event in the country (i am and always be an airplane junky). anyways i was enjoying the night airshow, vaping away. someone from the crowd approached me (he was not an EAA official) and told me i cannot "smoke" here. i told him i am not smoking and to beat it... ie get lost. when he left and turned his back i continued right on vaping. there were people ahead of me vaping and someone was smoking a cigarette. he went and bothered all of them. it did not appear that anyone official cared about the vaping although i know smoking wasnt officially allowed. as far as the vapers go, what harm were they doing to this guy why did he feel it was his mission to get them to stop. it does zero bodily harm to him and produces almost no oder... does not stink like cigarettes. when he told me that i wasnt allowed to smoke and i told him that i was not smoking he shook his head in disbelief. really i am not smoking dont like it too da@# bad. he also told the guy that was smoking that he was not allowed to smoke his cigarette.... now i no longer care for cigarettes but i do not understand why it is nessary to ban smoking in outdoor venues. i know and fully understand that they do not want people to smoke anywhere near fueled or fueling aircraft; that should be common sense but the spectator area really?? its outside so it is not really doing anyone any harm... i personally do not care if they smoke, it should be their choice so long as i am not trapped in a closed area and forced to directly breath that crap.

as far as this guy bothering people vaping... my wife and i both felt that he should mind his own buisness.... he has allot of nerve bothering people, he is a spectator not an EAA official and has not authority to tell anyone to do anything. the only thing he could have done was complain to someone and when they discovered that the supposed smokers were actually using ecigs; they probably would have laughed at him.

i do think its great to see vaping catch on and seeing more and more people vaping and less smoking. as time passes cigarettes are going to become nearly extinct.... thats awesome... less sickness and death and people still continue living their lives as normal getting their nicotine to help them cope with life without dying for it.

They prohibit smoking in outdoor events like that because its a event that attracts children and families they don't want children or people not fond of cigarette smoke to be forced to breath it in when their looking at the planes. Although its outdoors the stench lingers and they want to keep the people happy so they come back next time.

Did you even try to explain to him or did you just give him an attitude

sounds like you were just rather the fight then understanding

actaully he did not give me chance to explain it. he simply said "you cant smoke here" and i said i am not smoking. he shook his head and walked away did not want to he an explanation. so no i wasnt for a fight he did not want to hear an explantion. he simple saw something that looked like a cigarette and didnt feel that i should be doing it.

we also had someone in the crowd walking around with cards that said "i am deaf and have no job can you spare $2 to help support my family".. simply BS and kind of funny if you think about it. if you are truely broke what are you doing going to EAA air adventure... if you not a member it costs $40 just to walk in the gate. i handed him back the card and told him to beat it, he was a scammer. geeze there were some weirdo's in that crowd.

They Prohibit Smoking out doors because it has been demonized and its popular to do it. Most of us smoked at places where there were others present. Its not hard to not blow smoke on to a child.

Some people do need to be put in their place we do need to promote a positive image as vapors to get a good public opinion but we dont have to be door mats.

Hmm, tough call.

I would have taken the time to say "Oh I'm not smoking, this is a (personal) vaporizer", then turn away.

We're all going to go through this, as people learn of this technology. I'd rather be on the side that's going to promote the new idea, rather than leave people in the dark.

But hey, that's just my choice. :2c:

You really ought to take a moment and put yourself in the other person's shoes; you go to a public event that you expect to be smoke free (and maybe you have a particular sensitivity to cigarettes, or a personal/family story involving cigarettes), you get there, and half a dozen "jokers" are smoking away, as if they didn't have a care in the world. What do you do? Call security? Ask them to stop? A reasonable approach would be to ask the person directly but politely, then call security, no?

If the guy was an official at the event I'd understand. But this guy had no authority to tell anyone anything. One day someone is going to split his hair for him.

Shoulda told him he won a prize! The chance to start a prop plane. And then leave out the important parts about how to do it...

I thought it was because of the Kerosene; don't all airfields ban smoking?

I used to work for an airline, and they didn't ban smoking... :D but I definitely wasn't lighting up anywhere near that Antonov 124, with leaky wings

as someone who has been a flight student on and off (its expensive) i can tell you from personal experience that some aircraft (cessna 152 i flew most of the time was famous for this) will leak fuel overboard through the vents if they have been fueled too much on a hot day. 95% of the aircraft at this event are powered by 100 LL aviation gasoline not kerosene based jet fuel. not saying that 100LL avaition gasoline is any safer; its just as flamable if not more. keeping a safe distance from the aircraft was traditionally enough to prevent an fires... it is not the risk of fire that would ban smoking from an entire airfield but more the anti smoking zeolots that got smoking baned from any public place. in some ways its better that way, our society is much cleaner as a result. what pisses me off is the people that think if "it looks and quacks like a duck it is a duck" attitude. simple textbook defintion vaping is not smoking as there is no combustion. someone tells me no smoking of course im going to say i am not smoking because honestly i'm not and i havent smoked in 2 years. i usually get the you are still smoking arguement which we all know is nonsense.

That is true! You can tell I used to work for a big outfit; I completely ignored avgas!

So how does everyone else explain an e-cig, when confronted?

(on a side note, I was vaping quite comfortably, while refueling my car today)
