I wick my russian the same as my KF3.1's, just take the cotton to the top of the juice channels, not into them. Dry hits are most common with too much cotton through the coil.
My favourite setup is 5 turns of .3mm kanthal round a 2.5mm drill bit, with just enough cotton to be snug through the coil, you should be able to carefully pull it back and fourth through the coil without it rucking up either side as you pull, if it does, pull a little off and try again.
Don't forget that R91% & KF's also work well with silica wicks, and are easier to set up.
