How long is the initial kanthal likely to last before needing to be replaced? I may be in a position where I'm unable to get additional for 2 weeks after getting the atty.. possibly longer if I don't find a dependable source to get it from.

I would rarher refer to them as upgrades....Yes as far as I am aware anything that ships is upgraded, but we'll have to wait for the man to confirm.
if i understand chopper's policies right there is no reason for the buyer to worry either way. anybody who doesn't want to attempt this on his/her own is welcome to send it back to chopper to get it done by him.
naturally, it would be nice, since we all have some experience fiddling with pvs, if that would not be necessary.

Let it be known that yesterday in one of my highly intelligent rants I decided that we are going to start referring to rebuildables as RBA or RBAs. Now me being the big headed arrogant big mouth that I am would like it to be known that I have seen at least 2 other members use this acronym since my announcement, no declaration is a better word. So I am taking credit in my short 4ish months here as a member, for coining a new acronym that will now be used worldwide. I ask you all now to help encourage the use of this new abbreviation, if for no other reason than we are lazy typers and its much faster and easier.
