Whoa! NEVER MIND!

did some quick research and came up with this on Diacetyl (from Wikipedia)

The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has suggested that diacetyl, when used in artificial butter flavoring (as used in many consumer foods), may be hazardous when heated and inhaled over a long period.

Workers in several factories that manufacture artificial butter flavoring have been diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare and serious disease of the lungs. The cases found have been mainly in young, healthy, non-smoking males. There are no known cures for bronchiolitis obliterans except for lung transplantation.

While several authorities have called the disease "Popcorn Worker's Lung," a more accurate term suggested by other doctors may be more appropriate, since the disease can occur in any industry working with diacetyl: diacetyl-induced bronchiolitis obliterans.

Yikes - that's quite horrifying! Well, that definitely isn't an option (though it was a great idea before this was known - heh).

Thanks for the heads up! I just wrote an e-mail to Wilton's to find out if their Clear Butter Flavor contains Diacetyl. I've only used it a few times so I don't think I'm in any danger as it takes people years of working in a factory breathing in these fumes to develop the disease, but I'll surely stop using it if their response indicates that it is the flavoring used. It would be unfortunate because it tastes REALLY good, but since it smells EXACTLY like buttered popcorn, I'm afraid that they're going to say yes. Bummer.:(

I'll report back when I get a response.

On a side note, it seems awful strange that the disease is found mainly in healthy, young, non-smokers. Is it because they're more likely to be working on the factory floor, perhaps?

Your ONLY concern would be possible damage to the atomizer? What about salt in the lungs?

I wouldn't worry about that too much. I use saline spray for my dried out sinuses all the time, and they'll inject it into your veins in a hospital. The amount of salt would be very small besides, and it wouldn't vaporize anyway. I'm not sure you could even get a salty flavor that way because the salt wouldn't be carried by the vapor. The thing to do would be to flavor the cartridge itself somehow, then you'd get the salt flavor that way just by putting the cart in your mouth, when combined with the aroma of the vapor, you'd get the desired flavor... in theory anyway.

Away..
I can't see salt making it in a vape. VG and PG have a sweet taste naturally and vaporize to about zero rezidue. Menthol is the same way even though its a solid. It gases at somewhere in the low 100's degrees. Actual salt on the other hand does not and if added to a vape solution will crystalize on the atomizer. Salt is also very corrosive to metal. Nichrome is highly resistant to this though.
I'd be looking for a low temp safe addin that will vaporize at a temp below the average running temp of the atty bowl and produces a salty sensation to the nerves.
If it exists................just a few facts and some food for thoughts lol

what about magnesium chloride? MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE
Inhalation:
Inhalation of dust may cause mild irritation to the mucous membranes.
Ingestion:
Since magnesium salts are slowly absorbed, abdominal pain, vomiting and ........ may be the only symptoms. However, if elimination is blocked by bowel blockage or other reasons, CNS depression, lack of reflexes, hypocalcemia (deficiency of calcium in the blood) may occur.
Skin Contact:
No adverse effects expected but may cause minor skin irritation.
Eye Contact:
No adverse effects expected but dust may cause mechanical irritation.
Chronic Exposure:
No information found.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
No information found.

No thanks.

That's why I say salt the mouthpiece, and let the aroma from the flavoring do the rest. It'd work in a similar way as a salt-rimmed margarita.

I looked up sodium acetate and it shows a synonym of vinegar.
Vinegar is normaly listed as Acetic Acid. Odd...........it was a syn too.....

I like the idea of wetting the inside of the cart mouth peice and coat it with finely ground salt.
The moisture that forms from puffing allows you to touch your tounge to the mouth peice opening for a taste of salt. A quick hard 1st hit should give you a little salty taste most times.

Trapped within my imagination
Hmmm, interesting idea with the moist/salt on the cart...Otherwise, I would think a lemon or lime flavor would be the best bet for simulating a saltiness. Providing you could find it lightly or non sweet ( my mother was not allowed salt and used lemon or lime) One of these used with a totally non sweet e-liquid such as Cubin Cigar-roasted chicken etc.. might get close...

About the possible Diacetyl being in a butter flavoring: Kate checked this out a while back..She wrote Loranns and asked if their butter flavor contained it..They said It did not... I can't speak for other brands..

thats a good idea. If it is a 510 you could remove that little cap and put a little salt in there.

This thread prompted me to do something, well, stupid. I dissolved a chicken bullion cube and mixed it with VG. N A S T Y !
