Here's what I just sent:

*****************
Dear Mr. President,

As a loyal supporter and proud American, I am extremely concerned about legislation that might keep the new so-called "electronic cigarettes" off the market by placing them under FDA control and requiring years of testing before approval.

I, Mr. President, am a case study in the effectiveness of this amazing device, which is an electronic vapor-delivery system that may or may not contain nicotine. And I am one of the many "accidental quitters" who happened upon this safer alternative and abruptly quit smoking after a 30+-year, pack-a-day habit. I used to shush doctors when they'd start to talk to me about quitting. "I don't even want to hear it, you're wasting your breath and my time." I had NO intention of quitting smoking on March 14th this year -- until I received my first e-cig. Since then, it's been nothing but positive. No more losing sleep from lying awake at night hacking. No more waking in the middle of the night and going on the porch for a smoke. No more fire hazard, no more dropping a lit Zippo in my lap while driving. No more ashes, burn holes, smelly butts to discard. And just think of the savings to the VA, of which I am a client. Decreased risk of lung cancer, emphysema, etc. Easier and quicker dental cleanings.

My friends and family are so thrilled that I’ve finally quit smoking. They had long since given up on me. The patch or the gum would never have worked for me, because part of the feeling I crave is the “throat hit,” as we call it – the sensation produced when smoke or vapor is inhaled. This product provides that sensation without all the carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, arsenic, and hundreds of other chemicals present in tobacco.

President Obama, my story is typical of thousands of others. Finally a way to give up all those toxic chemicals and quit polluting the atmosphere, and still satisfy a craving we're going to yield to one way or the other. Scores of doctors and scientists have come out in support of e-cigs. The only thing their prohibition would do is to keep lining Big tobacco's pockets. Please ensure that any legislation you sign will explicitly allow the import, sale, development, and use of electronic cigarettes during any testing phase that might take place. I consider myself more health-conscious than most of my peers (with the exception of my unbeatable nicotine habit), and have no qualms about being a human guinea pig in this grand experiment. Put warning labels on them if you must, prohibit sale to minors for sure, allow no health or stop-smoking claims, but please don't take them away from us!

Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

That is beyond the realm of reasonable conclusions: The President of the United States -- the role model for young black and white teens -- who quit smoking to seek the highest office, using a product of unknown manufacture containing unregulated, untested, unknown liquid that he will suck into his lungs, all made in China where American dollars would flow from an endorsement.

You think that is reasonable? You think his advisers would say, "Shoot yeah, suck on that, Mr. President. It'll make you feel real good. Let's get the media in for some photos. Maybe we can give one to that angry North Korean dude with the spikey hair."

That's life in Oz only.

Keep in mind that Obama was co-sponsor of the anti-tobacco bill to turn over tobacco control to the FDA, a bill now awaiting a Senate vote and which Obama will sign into law.

Exactly my point. By legitimizing e-cigs, we free up American companies to develop and manufacture them. Some already are. Bring all this business back onto American soil!

Simply not going to happen, Cheryl. I think you underestimate the hatred for all things tobacco. Watch some Senate hearings and you'll understand.

The anti-smoking tide turned in the past decade to become a tidal wave of anger that is crashing ashore now in the form of bans and restrictions and taxation and ways to force smokers to quit using approved pharmaceutical products. You see it everywhere.

I will not soon forget one man's post in a "comments" section that he would never vote for Obama because Obama once smoked, and that showed such a weakness of character as to make him unfit for public office. Obama's "bad judgment" to smoke cigarettes, even as a young man, was ruinous in this man's eyes.

To people like that, and many others not so adamant, e-smoking is just another bad judgment by addicts seeking techno-fixes.

To imagine it in the highest office in the land is not realistic in today's climate.

I wrote Pres. Obama, e-mail. got off subject spam back.

Tobacco has become the Salem witch hunt, McCarty commie hunt. Every generation has to have one.

The Anti's have whipped people up into a frenzy. What is sad most people don't know why they are angry other than they are supposed to be angry at smokers. They even feel guilty if they are not angry at smokers.

I found this while searching e cigs with the new Bing search...

"Stearns has sent electronic cigarettes to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and President Obama to help them quit smoking. He’s been seen using the device in the Speaker’s Lobby, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) banned smoking two years ago. Her office did not respond to a request for comment by press time."

OMG! You've gotta be kidding me!

You should post that on it's own thread.

edit: Nevermind. It's from March. Old news (I thought it was new)

I hate to be a "downer" but I don't think you can expect any help from him. He is the one that signed the latest cigarette tax into law (I was told by someone "what do you expect, he can afford the tax) and as also stated in one of the other threads, he is President, even if they ban the e-cig, he will still be able to get them. I don't think he will do anything to "rock the boat" with congress, particularly since it is his party that is pushing the legislation.

I hate to admit it as an avid Obama supporter, but I think you're right (still, I wrote to him anyway!)

Obama's already struggling to get his policies through Congress: Iraq, Gitmo, environmental & energy issues, health care... Last thing he needs right now is all the headlines screaming, "Obama vetoes tobacco regulation bill!" The right was already sharpshooting him during the campaign for having been a smoker, like that would in any way impact his ability to govern.

There is no way Obama will veto the bill. He also apparently still smokes, although you will never see him do it in public, and certainly won't see him use an e cig (even if he does).

What is rarely mentioned in news stories is that the tobacco companies will pay for this regulation...which means smokers will be paying even higher prices. The government is addicted to tobacco taxes and literally cannot afford to either ban cigarettes or support anything like e cigs that might take away their beloved tax revenue (while at the same time they demonize those who use the product that funds their programs). The e cig is, for me, a perfect tax revolt - avoid cigarette taxes, deprive the government of those tax dollars while they demonize me, and still enjoy the act of smoking...which is also precisely why the zealots hate the e cig so much.

My hope is that manufacturers will find a way to extract nicotine from other nightshade plants rather than tobacco (apparently, both potato and tomato plant leaves have high concentrations of nicotine, although not nearly so much as tobacco). If that can be done, how could the e cig possibly be called a tobacco product?
