Sense of smell/ Stale Smoke

Hey all.... Today is my first day vaping! YAY.... But,,, One thing I was thinking about today. When I quit smoking analogs before... one thing that made me start up again was the stale nasty smell.... I am unsure as to why that smell aided in the starting back up... but it did... I would smell it and say.... eeeeeeewwww I want one!

So... my question is... Do you all smell clothing, old boxes... vehicles... things as such... do you smell the old stale smell... or does vaping cover that up... hope it is not a dumb question.... If so... how has it affected you?

Thank you

Hi Rachel. CONGRATULATIONS on making the switch!

I would say the only difference between us is that I used that stench as an added incentive to never go back.

My office is a designated room in the house. While I smoked, here is what I had done to reduce the odor:

1. I was able to keep the windows open for ventilation (Florida)
2. Used an air purifier.
3. At night, a large fan was left running facing the open window so as to pull the air from the room and push it outside.
4. The door had self-adhesive strips and door seals fitted so as to prevent the smoke from reaching the rest of the house.

Despite my efforts, the odor always reached the rest of the house regardless of what I tried. Fortunately, after washing the curtains and leaving the windows open for a few days, things improved dramatically. I believe the fact that the furniture is leather had a lot to do with that.

I was not as lucky with my office, unfortunately. I left the window open for over a month and the smell did not fully and truly leave. Only after the walls were cleaned and painted did the intensity of the odor drop to barely noticeable. A microfiber sofa bed still has traces of the odor despite being sprayed countless times. It is in the mattress which has been cleaned and left to sit in the sun a few times.

I had an old car which I traded in about 6 months ago. I vape heavily in the new car and no one has ever made mention of any type of odor whatsoever. I still get that "new car small" when I turn on the ac :)

Depending upon how heavily you smoked, it will take a while before the smell is completely gone. Since the odor serves to attract you back to smoking, I would do everything possible to eliminate it ASAP.

All the best!

The smoke smell will eventually go away- could take a couple weeks, could be a couple months for house and car. Washing certain items will help, including ALL cloths and linens. This lingering stale smoke smell probably wont be too attractive when your nose gets back to working correctly in a couple weeks. Its a double edged sword though..you'll smell the flowers, along with stinky feet and wet dog.
Vapor though, leaves no lasting odor. You'll still need to clean your car windshield, as it seems the vapor will build up as well, just not near as quick as cigarette tar. But overall, while using e cig's- the bystanders will smell a faint aroma of whatever your using, but it dissipates quickly- within seconds.
If stale smoke attracts you back to analogs, Id reccomend having a few tobacco vapes laying around. I noticed that when When first made the switch, the chocolate vapes were my all day, but if I got cig cravings, a few pulls on a tobacco vape cured it rather quickly. Just a thought. But overall, the food and candy vapes made me forget about tobacco. I love my sweets....and I vape em instead of eating them so much now.

And get rid of those ashtrays. They are the worst offenders. Change your AC filters in the house. Vacuum the upholstery and carpet in your car. If you used the ashtray in your car, take it out and scrub it squeaky clean.

Vaping does not cover up the stale cigarette smell.

It takes a while, but the tobacco odors eventually fade away. The brown tobacco smoke stains, however, will not go away by themselves.

But, you knew I was gonna say that.
