wow.... everyone on this board has fallen victim to the cigarettes. we have all decided to stop supporting the big tobacco companies, but the damage and effects have already been done. most can be reversed however the addiction will be the hardest to reverse. its everyones duty on this forum, having fallen victim to this, to inspire and educate our youth that ciggarettes will kill you. in my opinion and i am sure will get a lot of flak for this, but tobacco should be banned in all forms. i understand, if you dont want to smoke then dont, and most non-smokers its easy to say that. that once your addicted its not easy. if knowing, that ciggarettes will kill you, or at the very least inhibit you to fuction normaly, cause serious effects to he body doesnt stop a tabacco user, then what will? if usa canada, would just ban tobacco all together, children would have no choice but to not smoke. yes, it will force a underground market, but the price of ciggarettes will be astronomical. if weed is a drug, cokaine is a drug, etc.. and those are all banned, why not bann the leading drug that causes the most amount of deaths? nicotine may not kill people, but its naturally in tobacco so there is no way around that nicotine is the reason why people die, because of the addiction. however, lots of studies show that nicotine is no more harmful then a cup of coffee. so, why not ban the sale of tobacco?

What caught my eye was not any of the sensational footages (baby smoking, lots of people in hospital wards, etc.)
but the way the spokesperson of Philip Morris comported herself on key statements she made.
Notice how when she needed to defend the advertising, she would look away.
But, confronted with the baby smoking video, she looked straight at him and said it was bad.

I'm against banning any freedom. You let them beat down smokers freedom and now they're trying to attack sugar. Should governments be our parents and make choices for us? Do I think big tabacco is evil? Yes, but so is government. Just because some people(me included) can't practice moderation, doesn't mean you should ban it for everyone. The earth does not center around any one individual even though alot of people(we Americans are worst in this issue) thinks it does. Respect your freedom as well as others. I don't wear my pants around my ankles but kids do. Thats their freedom to do so. To me they look like ...... but I have the freedom to think that. Some people aren't happy until it's banned. I really hate what america has become. A bunch of people who have forgotten what freedom is and how hard it was to get. So the government keeps ripping it away and it's met with applause. I mean it's in the name of good health right? You just wait and see where that road leads us. Sorry to rant but when someone says something should be banned from adults it angers me!

This video is about regulating the marketing by American cigarette companies (Philip Morris) to kids (5-14 years of age) in Indonesia.
Papor I know it's not right. I apologize for my outburst. I was commenting on jtracc's reply. How does a five year old buy cigarettes?

....I remember not to long ago, I was griping and getting angry at tax rates hiking up the costs of my cigz...You can't force all current smokers to deal with a cigarette ban...I think the comments just a little unrealistic...

...I may have regretted my decision to smoke, but it was my decision to make...

Sorry, I just feel if the government could ban the sales of tabacco, we're just heading down a dark path...

I figured it was something like that. lol

The video actually starts off with a 2 year old smoking like a stud. : / Indonesia will sell single cigs to anyone that has the 5 cents to buy them. No laws whatsoever.

The video is pretty long (45min) but it is pretty well done and very shocking. Philip Morris and the cig companies are targeting 3rd world nations, now that the U.S. and other developed nations know what BT is doing to us.

Cheers.

Anyone else got a cigarette craving from watching Marlboro man light one ?

Tobacco campaigns have ALWAYS been targeted at young people and always will be. But what really surprised (and shocked) me was how incredibly aggressive in nature the advertising is. Never saw anything like that before, and that is inspite of me living in a country where tobacco ads can still be seen quite often (not on TV, though)...

I found it interesting that youth anti-smoking campaigns are proven to increase youth tobacco use, and that those campaigns always increase when domestic sales slump.

They're doing the same thing in America -- they're just sneakier about it.

What did the current administration do to "protect the kids"? They banned clove cigarettes (which were back months later as clove cigarillos). Something expressly NOT made by a US tobacco company. I didn't notice the domestic-produced flavored cigarettes or rolling papers go anywhere...

Ironically, that Marlboro Ad was probably one of the ones that started me smoking (at 10) in the 1960's. It actually occurred to me when it popped up. I flashed back and recalled how cool it looked when Marlboro Man looked off in the distance with the brim of his cowboy hat partially obscuring his face as he took a drag.

@jtracc - Disagree. Total prohibition of tobacco would cause more harm than good. We've already seen, in this country, what chaos the prohibition of alcohol caused. I am of the opinion that the War on Drugs® causes similar harms. Also, I use Swedish snus in addition to PVs, so I take the notion of a total tobacco ban a little personally - snus helped me break free of smoking.

Anyway, I watched the video. I found myself wishing that there were English subtitles for the non-English dialog. Still, it was a strange and depressing look at how badly out of control BT is. The sheer quantity of cig billboards was surreal, as was the cig-advert-dedicated jumbo-tron. The thing that struck me about the "Go-A-head" billboards was that it had a strange familiarity about it. I've never been to Indonesia, so that's not it. It wasn't too long into the docu that it hit me - I smoked Sampoerna brands for a number of years - one of my favourites was the Milds that are one of the most popular, according to the film. I recognised that stylised 'A', but couldn't place it until it was explained.

Thanks for posting this, Pias. Very educational, even if it's depressing and scary.

Ya know Rusty...I was wishing I had the English subtitles too...then it hit me why they ain't there. This video is more for the Indonesian, thus the Indonesian subs. And, I am glad they have it. Cuz with BT on their "butts" they need a heads up to watch out for what's coming their way. : o

I agree, a total ban on anything only makes it more "I gotta have that" for the users.

I should give credit where due...."nanovapr" posted this on another thread of mine. Once I viewed it I felt like we all should.

Cheers!

I personally don't think I'm a "victim" of big tobacco. When I started using tobacco, I was under no illusions about the health ramifications. I knew it was bad for me and I did it anyway. Even though I've lost friends and relatives to tobacco related diseases, I hold no particular animosity towards big tobacco.

I'm really glad I don't smoke any more. I'm always happy to see others quit. Youth tobacco use is better addressed through parenting than anything else. Adult tobacco use is what it is. Does big tobacco employ specific marketing and manufacturing tactics to gain new users and promote brand loyalty? Sure. So does starbucks. No one from big tobacco ever came to my house, put a gun to my head, and said "Light up or I'll shoot you.". Not even once. I made my own bad decisions.
