Those of us over 50 really have a hard time....I use reading classes and then holding a magnifying lens and keeping my hands steady while holding the wick at the same time is a real chore...then after the work is done, you still have to thread that camel through the eye of the needle... That's why when I get a good coil build, I keep using it for as long as possible. I suppose building several at once and keeping them in a little zip bag w/ the allen wrench is a good idea (especially if traveling) but you still have to thread that thin wire!!

I have one of these and love it.

I dont use it to make coils but it serves a million purposes as a hobbyist.

*a good peiece of advice*
cover both side of the clips in heatshrink, it keeps the sharp teeth from cutting into delicate items (i.e. the wick)

I was thinking that the hole in the RBA could accommodate a wire bent in half...and this might work fairly well.
Seems my wife has some of these- will have to find one and try it!!

I should mention I have made the holes larger in a couple of my rba its easy enough to do if your careful .I used a drill bit but a file would work for those afraid they may break there atomizers . This makes putting a coil through the holes much easier

I have read this thread start to finish many times. The purpose of doing so was to figure out what wire to buy for the ohms I wanted. I looked for 4 things: wire gauge, thickness of wick, wraps/coils, and ohms. I was just trying to remember it all and just about to write it down. Decided that this might make it easier for myself and others.

I wrap 4 on a doubled silica rope to get me at 1.6ohms w/ 32.
I like the thinner wire best- it is easier to wrap. 6 wraps and I'm at about 2.4-2.6 (great for the VV Reos).

I have some of those needle threaders. The problem with them is that when you stick them through the wick, they pinch together (like they're supposed to) but the coil is usually too "long" (or "wide") and they don't spread back out so you can put the wick material through the end. The only time they work is with a tiny little 3-4 wrap coil that is pushed together tightly. I've found that just a spare piece of wire twisted together around the wicking material works better.

Oh, hmmm. Hadn't even thought of that. Oops. Maybe I'll try that. It'll make the wire "doubled" until it gets through the hole; I'm thinking it might work for 32 gauge wire, but the 28 gauge seems like it would be a little stiff and a little too thick to go through doubled. I don't have that much trouble getting the wire through the little holes. I've used those threaders to get cotton wick through a coil that I wrapped around a nail (instead of with the wick and a needle) and they aren't quite long enough to be great. I have been pretty lucky about being able to get the wire through the holes....knock on wood.

somthing to play with:

as i have a couple of mesh-RBA's, i found a way to reuse wicks from them. i therefore cut a piece from the tank part of the used mesh in the size of 10 x (A) mm. (A) varies from 15 - 20 mm. i then take silica rope, in this example it's a thin one. i wrap the prerolled piece of mesh around the rope.



it does not have to be a solid wick. you just need 2 or 3 layers of mesh around the silica rope. and of course one can play with the thickness of the rope. main thing: the mesh is pre-oxidized.

in this example, i reused a coil out of 28 AWG Kanthal A1 that reads 1.6 ohm (don't ask me why i did that. probably i pre-wrapped it on the hex key that comes with the DID, it's quite a fat one) that's why it is fixed prerolled on the poles. normally i wrap it on the mesh first).

before i definitely installed the wick, i additionally added another layer of mesh before because of the fat coil it was too thin.



i wrapped the loose ends of the silica wick around the poles in double P-shape and cut them.



on kicked Reo Grand at 10 W vapes quite ok, i guess next time i will take a thicker silica rope. #500 ist my preferred mesh nowadays, here it's #400.

I did it!!!!! YAY!

I made my very first coil/wick!!! And it works!!!

Now I used the A-7 because I still have the stock coil I am running on my Reomizer.
On my Grand, 3.7 AW IMR

32g A-1 Kanthal AWG
organic cotton wick approx 2mm
4 wraps
1.56 ohm

Holy Crapola! 3-4 hits from this using 32mg juice and I am swirling with the vapor!
